"I've had 4 of these vans over the years. Excellent drive train. Solid engine, although a little weak in the mileage dept. None have ever left me on the side of the road. Good hauler and it has good tow capacity. The ABS isn't the greatest design. They work good when all is right but they have been known to be finicky. Also the front ball joint/steering system has an incredible number of ball joints to get around the AWD. Not an issue on the RWD but the AWD is a great system. Interior is roomy and very useful. My family of 6 has traveled 1000 miles and everything and everyone was inside."
"I have owned 3 of these now and out over 200,000 miles on 2 of them. Due to different options I cant rate them all the same but I love these vans. 4.3L V-6 "great engine" with AWD.. I wish they did not stop making them. I have almost 270,000 miles on this one and it still runs great! You still see quite a few of these on the road.
How many of the other minis do you still see around? Almost none!"
"Owned this 1999 Astro for 10 years, and owned a 1990 for several before that. The driveline is bulletproof - great engines, reasonable mileage out of the 4.3 V6. Always dependable, great in bad weather (including snow)...well balanced handling for a van. If you need to haul people and stuff and get there safely, it'll do it.
Quality and design is typical GM - handles break, AC loses charge, vinyl cracks...mostly nickel and dime stuff. Back seat comes out for more room (but it's heavy). It doesn't like crosswinds on the highway, but most vans don't. Very comfortable (LT version), easy to drive 10 hours a day on vacation if needed.
We had the transmission overhauled to beef it up to the tow package rating (LTs do not come with the HD transmission), and added a transmission oil cooler. Had no trouble at all hauling a trailer several times between Kansas and Colorado, even in horrible winter weather on I70 after everyone else gave up.
Family size is dwindling so after two Astros it's time to downsize...but if I still needed a van, an Astro would be at the top of my list."
"The Astro van has a good reliable engine and gets 17 to 24 mpg. Handling is more truck like than the actual mini vans. It has more room to haul big items than a mini van. With over 200,000 miles it doesn't use oil. The transmission needs to be serviced on schedule. The 12 volt auxiliary plugins/cigar lighter are fragile. Driver's door and passenger arm rest cracks from sweat etc by 50,000 miles. Overall The Chevy Astro/GMC Safari was a good design with decent mpg."
Pros: "Super reliable, Lots of room, goes anywhere."
Cons: "Cheap plastic parts in the interior that all break"

"My 3rd and last Astro van I've owned. Amazing van!
Very few problems. It will go anywhere with its AWD/RWD. I keep wondering when the brakes will need replacing? Still original pads on front with 138K miles. Still plenty of material left and I have pulled trailers. Drivetrain never fails. Amazing durability. Good for 250K miles with normal maintance.
In 2005 Chevy finally got everything right and then stopped making them. I'd buy another new one tomorrow if they still made them."
