2008 smart fortwo: A Perfectly Pleasant Roller Skate

Our recent drive in the smart fortwo was our first in the second-generation model due to arrive in the U.S. in early 2008. We were most surprised by how agreeable it was on the highway, given the short, six-foot wheelbase and 1,700-pound curb weight. In the convertible model, we especially enjoyed being able to open and close the roof at highway speeds. A slow-shifting automated manual transmission provoked the most criticism from those on the drive, but what's a quirky car without quirks? Of course, the stated 12.8-second zero-to-60-mph time and 90-mph top speed are rather peculiar in their own right.
