Set for its official reveal due next week at the annual VW/Audi fan fest at Wörthersee in Austria, Volkswagen offered an early look at its Golf GTI Roadster, "Vision Gran Turismo" in this series of design sketches. Based - albeit rather loosely -- on the new Golf GTI platform, this competition-inspired one-off was designed to be part of the classic Sony Playstation game.
Major motivation for the real vehicle comes from a 3.0-liter twin-turbo VR6 that cranks out 496 horsepower and 491 lb-ft of torque. That force gets shipped to a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic and on to each wheel via VW's 4Motion AWD system. The Golf GTI Roadster's full sport suspension is complemented by huge 15-inch front/14-inch rear brakes while the 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels are wrapped in 235/35 rubber up front and 275/30 boots out back.
Finished in a vibrant metallic red, the Golf GTI Roadster carries the low, wide, lean and mean look to delightful extremes. From its deep front splitter and racy cutdown windscreen to its massive rear wing and functional integrated diffuser, this high-intensity 2-seater was clearly built for speed. That high-velocity character carries over to its cabin, which features racing-style seats and harnesses plus a yoke-type multifunction steering wheel. We look forward to seeing the real Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo in the metal next week, along with a number of other cool Wörthersee wonder machines that will include the Audi A3 Clubsport Quattro Concept that we profiled here last week.
