Although bigger and more powerful than last year's model, the new
Toyota Prius has continued on in the tire tracks of its illustrious predecessor and once again claimed top honors in the EPA's annual Fuel Economy Ratings. Its 51-mpg city and 48-mpg highway rating put the 2010 Prius comfortably ahead of the still-most-respectable second-place 41/36-mpg stats of the new
Ford Fusion Hybrid and its Mercury Milan Hybrid cousin with the
Honda Civic Hybrid (40/45 mpg),
Honda Insight (40/43 mpg) and
Lexus HS 250h (35/34 mpg) following in that order. Rounding out 2010's Top 10 mileage makers were the
Nissan Altima Hybrid (35/33 mpg), front-drive versions of the
Ford Escape/
Mazda Tribute/Mercury Milan
Hybrids (34/31 mpg), the
smart fortwo coupe/cabriolet (33/41 mpg),
Toyota Camry Hybrid (33/34 mpg) and the front-drive
Lexus RX 450h 32/28 mpg). At the other end of the econo scale, the
Lamborghini Murcielago and Murcielago Roadster managed only eight mpg in the city and 13 mpg on the highway, narrowly nipping the 1001-horsepower Bugatti Veyron (8/14 mpg) to claim "Thirstiest
New Cars You Can Buy For 2010" honors. The complete 2010 EPA fuel economy guide can be found at
