Offering an early look at some of the visual and technical design elements we may well see on future-generation production models, the Subaru VIZIV Concept was unveiled in Geneva. Its name is a loose amalgam of the words Vision for Innovation, and VIZIV Concept reportedly was designed to deliver high efficiency and impressive performance under all surface and driving conditions.

Finished in Mistral Silver Metallic, this 3-door/4-seat crossover/SUV hatch features bold but clearly interlinked front/rear styling motifs complemented by a highly-sculpted body side treatment and unique configuration of its overscaled door that pivots up and out to ease access to the passenger compartment. Although the cabin of the VIZIV has a distinct driver focus, custom information displays at all three other seating positions let passengers "share the thrill of being in the driver's seat."

Motivating the VIZIV Concept is a proposed next-gen powertrain called the Subaru Boxer Diesel Hybrid. This plug-in package uses a 2.0-liter Subaru flat-4 turbodiesel backed by a high-torque-capable version of Subie's Lineartronic CVT automatic to drive the front wheels and two electric motors that independently power each rear wheel as part of what the automaker is calling "Independent-rear-motor-driven symmetrical AWD."  The car's computer controller determines when to engage each of the power units, with the basic logic dictating the electric motors be used for for slow-speed city work when possible and the diesel for freeway cruising or when maximum acceleration is required. While offering no data on total system output or performance, Subaru indicates this new variation on the symmetrical AWD theme will enhance handling, cornering and overall maneuverability, both on and off road as well as boost acceleration.

Subaru has not confirmed when we may see either this new styling direction or its enhanced plug-in/AWD system turn up on a production model.
