Revealed: 2014 Qoros 3 Sedan - Geneva 2013
Set for its public reveal in Geneva, the 2014 Qoros 3 Sedan marks the latest and arguably most ambitious entry by a Chinese automaker onto the world stage. Formed in 2007, Qoros Auto Co. Ltd. is an equal partnership operation between Chery Automobile -- China's biggest independent automobile manufacturer and exporter -- and the global holding firm, Israel Corporation. This new "C-segment" front-drive 4-door is set to go on sale in China during the second half of 2013 and in various European markets by year's end. To optimize its chances for success, the Qoros 3 was designed and engineered in Munich and Shanghai using materials and techniques intended to have it earn it top marks in all international crash and safety tests.
Developed under the theme "Creating Future History," the Qoros 3 Sedan boasts a stylish, contemporary exterior that features decidedly Euro-flavored cues and a face that reportedly will set the signature pattern for all of the firm's future offerings. Inside, the Qoros 3 Sedan's spacious, well-finished cabin is highlighted by a "floating" instrument cluster and center console that contains an 8.0-inch high-definition TFT display that controls all aspects of its infotainment systems. Rear-seat passengers enjoy generous legroom as the result of the car's near-class-leading 105.9-inch wheelbase, and the 60/40 split backs fold to expand capacity of the car's 15.9 cu-ft trunk.
The Qoros 3 Sedan will offer a choice of two 1.6-liter/4-cylinder gasoline engines at launch, both developed in collaboration with one of Europe's most highly regarded operations in the field, AVL Powertrain Engineering. The naturally-aspirated base motor makes 125 horsepower while the turbocharged variant develops 154, and both will offer start/stop technology. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed dual-clutch automated alternative. Two more new turbocharged 4-cylinder engines with direct fuel injection also are currently under development: a 130-horse/1.3-liter and a 182-horse/1.6-liter that will offer a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch upgrade.
Finally, the dynamic character of the 2014 Qoros 3 Sedan promises to be fully world class. Its chassis development and evaluation was carried out under the direction of Klaus Schmidt, Qoros's Executive Director of Vehicle Engineering and ex-head of the technology and driving dynamics department at BMW's M-Sport division. No word yet as to whether the Qoros 3 Sedan or other subsequent family members may also be heading to America at some point.
