Representing the 2-door side of the automaker's mid-size family, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet also make their debut in Detroit along side of the 2014 E-Class Sedan and Wagon models. Boasting even bolder exterior design, these more youthfully cast siblings also benefit from the same engineering enhancements and new comfort and safety touches. Unlike their 4-door kin that arrive here in the spring, the new E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet won't go on sale until next summer.

Gaining more contemporary cues, the front-end styling of these new Mercedes 2-door offerings feature aggressive V-shaped fascias highlighted by a new single-blade grille treatment with integrated M-B badge, prominent air intakes and a unique interpretation of the new E-Class headlamp treatment. Here too, the standard LED-enhanced units can be upgraded to full LED alternatives. The recast tail features a new soft cap, a revamped decklid with a chrome accent strip and wider, slimmer taillamps that also reflect a more assertive flavor that the ones found on the Sedan/Wagon but also help emphasize the lower/wider character.

The common heritage is equally apparent within, as the Coupe and Cabriolet match specific trim accent bits with numerous common design elements also found in their 4-door E-Class mates. Among the most prominent are a redesigned center console that replaces the conventional transmission lever with a new Direct Select controller and steering-wheel-mounted shifter paddles. The Cabriolet is crowned with a multi-layer acoustic one-touch power soft top that ensures it quietest-cabin-in-class status when running closed. It also features M-B's trick Aircap wind-deflector system in the windshield frame that automatically deploys at speeds above 25 mph to help reduce passenger compartment turbulence as well an auto-adjusting rear wind deflector between the rear-seat headrests. Those who favor al fresco motoring in cooler conditions also can opt for the automaker's innovative Airscarf neck-level warming system.

Among the many standard connectivity features shared by both the Coupe and Cabriolet are M-B's latest COMAND system with a 7.0-inch high-res color display, mbrace2 cloud-based telematics/infotainment package that provides open Internet access and Bluetooth. 

Each of these 2014 2-door models will offer two familiar engine choices. The rear-drive E350 Coupe, E350 Cabriolet and E350 Coupe 4Matic all-wheel drive are fitted with M-B's carryover 3.5-liter direct injected V6 that makes 302 horsepower while the E550 Coupe and Cabriolet come with the 402-horse/4.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Both engines feature new ECO Start/Stop circuitry and are backed by a 7-speed automatic transmission that now add a new efficiency-enhancing "M" mode that will automatically upshift after a set period of time following a manually selected downshift by the driver. To optimize handling, both the Coupe and Cabriolet also come with Agility Control selective damping suspension and offer the Advanced Agility package with full electronic damping control and sportier throttle mapping as an option.

On the safety side of the ledger, the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet benefit from the same new/upgraded safety and assistance systems introduced on the Sedan and Wagon. Collision Prevention Assist and an upgraded version of Attention Assist are standard while a 360-degree Surround View Camera, Parking Assist Package, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and a new generation Driver Assist Package that includes Distronic Plus with Steering Assist adaptive cruise control/distance keeping, Optimized Active Lane Keeping Assist, BAS Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist, Pre-Safe Plus for rear-end collision, and pedestrian-protecting low-speed Autonomous Emergency Braking are optional.

Pricing for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet will be released closer to their on-sale date.
