Hottest members of the revised E-Class contingent to debut in Detroit, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG 4Matic Sedan and even-more-intense 2014 E63 AMG 4Matic S-Model in both Sedan and Station Wagon forms elevate what had been an impressively high total performance bar to unprecedented levels. Matching even bolder appearance cues with an additional measure of power, longer list of standards and enhanced handling, these AMG-spec dream machines will arrive in the U.S. this summer.
Both versions of the 2014 E63 AMG family boast a selection of distinctively bold and even-bolder AMG-specific exterior upgrades keying off of unique front fascia treatments and other body kit bits, full LED headlights, wider fenders filled with 19-inch 10-spoke AMG light alloy wheels wrapped in staggered size (255/35 front and 285/30 rear) tires, functional rear diffusers and dual chrome exhaust outlets. The S-Model amps things up a touch with more aggressive front splitter and door sill elements, matte titanium gray-finish wheels with a bright perimeter flange, red brake calipers instead of silver units and a functional decklid lip spoiler on the S-Model Sedan.
Standard engine in the 2014 E63 AMG is the familiar AMG 5.5-liter Biturbo V8, although this time around, horsepower has been bumped from 518 to 550. Opt for an S-Model - which effectively replaces the previous AMG Performance Package option - and pony count in its underhood corral jumps to 577. That gain of 27 output units comes as the result of tweaks to the engine management system, higher fuel-injection pressures and increased turbo boost. Both engines feature mileage-enhancing ECO start/stop circuitry and are backed by an AMG SpeedShift MCT 7-speed automatic that offers four driver-selectable programs (Controlled Efficiency/Sport/Sport+/Manual). While M-B claims 0-60 mph times of 3.5-3.6 seconds with either engine, the electronically limited top speed increases from 155 mph to 186 mph on S-Models.
In finest AMG tradition, these new E-Class fast-tracker will also arrive with a comprehensive chassis redo that starts with a custom-tuned AMG Adaptive Sport Suspension with Comfort/Sport/Sport plus settings, a quick-ratio electro-mechanical power steering setup and wider front track dimensions. The 2014 E63 AMG lineup is also the first to be fitted with a standard 4Matic all-wheel-drive system specifically tuned for enhanced vehicle dynamics. Programmed to deliver a 33/67-percent rear-biased torque split under normal operation, it works with a custom-tailored 3-stage ESP stability control system and Torque Vectoring Brake in Sport Handling mode to help curtail understeer. The E63 AMG S-Models add one more element to the formula in the form of a standard limited-slip rear axle. They also allow buyers to swap the exceptionally capable high-performance standard disc brakes for a set of larger-but-lighter AMG carbon-ceramic super stoppers.
Inside, the new E63 AMG clan boasts a full range of AMG-spec trim enhancements, from sport seats to custom gauges to rubber-studded stainless steel pedals. The S-Models also feature unique upholstery and trim elements, silver seat belts and a flat-bottom steering wheel. New safety highlights include the addition of standard Collision Prevention Assist and Attention Assist 2.0 systems while a 14-speaker/1,200-watt Bang & Olufsen AMG BeoSound premium audio package has been added to the options roster.
Pricing for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 4Matic Sedan and AMG E63 S-Model Sedan and Station Wagon will be announced closer to their on-sale dates.
