Revealed: 2014 Cadillac CTS - New York 2013

Leading the charge towards tomorrow for GM's luxury division, the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS makes its debut in New York. This pivotal mid-size luxury sedan brings a new look, new technology and new attitude to the automaker's lineup as it goes after buyers who might otherwise be pondering cars like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It will be available in Standard, Luxury, Performance and Premium Collection trims as well as a new Vsport performance variant.

The 2014 CTS shares much of its platform architecture with the recently introduced Cadillac ATS compact sedan. Like the ATS, it also places great emphasis on lightweight materials and optimized construction techniques. The effort yields a vehicle that's nearly 5 inches longer than the current CTS and boasts 1.2 inches of additional wheelbase, but has a 40-percent stiffer structure and weighs nearly 245 pounds less in base form. Credit for part of that mass reduction comes from innovations like the fitment of all-aluminum doors, the first ever use on any Cadillac model.

Visually, the 2014 CTS embodies a more aggressive take on the division's Art and Science design theme. Matching more tautly drawn lines and a lower profile with edgier fascia treatments and striking LED-enhanced lighting elements, this new Cadillac sedan makes a far more dramatic curb-side statement than the car it replaces.

The larger and even more luxuriously appointed cabin on the new CTS will offer eight different "environments," each with its own distinctive skew and premium materials, but all sharing a clear driver orientation. Where base models feature a 5.7-inch driver information display, others have a reconfigurable 12.3-inch color display, and all are fitted with Cadillac's CUE infotainment/connectivity system that has a centrally mounted 8.0-inch color touchscreen.

Among the many upscale items offered are Cadillac's first 20-way power seats, two Bose premium audio packages, active noise cancellation, OnStar, a driver-configurable color head-up display, tri-zone climate control, navigation system and LED ambient lighting, along with Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Sport Alert and Front and Rear Automatic Braking. The new CTS also will be the first Cadillac to offer Automatic Parking Assist and motorized front safety belts that automatically adjust to ensure proper fit and tension. 

As Cadillac revealed previously, the 2014 CTS will offer three different powertrain combinations as well as the choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. The 321-horsepower/3.0-liter V6 carries over from the 2013 CTS and is joined by the 2.0-liter/272-horse turbocharged 4-cylinder introduced in the ATS. Both are backed by a 6-speed automatic transmission. Exclusive to the CTS Vsport is a new LF3 Twin-Turbo V6. Also featuring direct injection and variable valve timing to enhance efficiency, it makes a heady 420 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Teamed with a specially tuned paddle-shifted 8-speed automatic - also a first for Cadillac -- it can take the hottest CTS from 0-60 mph in blistering 4.6 seconds and still return 17/25 mpg city/highway EPA numbers.

With a lower center of gravity, near-ideal 50/50 weight distribution, reduced mass and a suspension tuned for agility and responsiveness, all CTS variants should possess outstanding dynamic characteristics. Even the base CTS will offer GM's sophisticated Magnetic Ride Control real-time damping system as an option. Although the new Vsport can't match the sheer underhood might of the 2013 CTS-V with its 556-horsepower supercharged V8, this newcomer could well prove more than an equal when it comes to at-the-limit handling. To ensure its 420 ponies get put to best use, the Vsport upgrade nets a quicker steering ratio, electronic limited-slip differential, recalibrated Magnetic Ride Control setup with a driver-selectable track mode, Brembo high-performance brakes, a heavy-duty cooling system and 18-inch staggered-width alloy wheels wrapped in sticky Pirelli performance rubber.

Production of the 2014 Cadillac CTS lineup is slated to start this fall, and cars will arrive at dealers later in the year. Pricing will be released closer to the actual on-sale date.
