Unveiled in Beijing, the Nissan Lannia Concept is forward-looking compact 4-door specifically aimed at young, "Post-80s" millennials in China. However, at the reveal, Nissan's Chief Planning Officer Andy Palmer indicated the dynamic visuals of this rakish compact sedan may have a wider-range impact. In presenting the Lannia at Auto China 2014, Palmer said the car was "designed by Chinese, built by Chinese for the Chinese people, and ultimately, for the world." While Nissan won't comment beyond that intriguing comment, we can't help but wonder if the Lannia's striking exterior will influence the next-generation Nissan Altima in the U.S.
Second Nissan Designed in China
The Lannia Concept is the second vehicle to come out of the Nissan Design China studio which opened last year in Beijing. Positioned as a "sedan theory breaker," it was created in concert with the automaker's Global Design Center and embodies Nissan's "next-gen" styling cues. These include the prominent brightwork chevron and boomerang LED headlamps that dominate its bold V-motion front end to sensual body contours, a kickup C-pillar and "floating" roof treatment. Still, the Lannia puts its own spin on these key themes introduced earlier on the Sport Sedan Concept, a precursor to the upcoming Nissan Maxima.
Last week's reveal of the 2015 Murano in New York proved that Nissan is dead serious about transitioning its latest generation of show cars - in that case, the Resonance Concept - into real-world production models with minimal changes. It will be interesting to see how much of the Lannia Concept's avant-garde design figures into the upcoming remake of the automaker's best-selling U.S. model.
