Rolling onto the scene in New York, the new 2014 Jaguar XJR is the most intense version yet of the automaker's flagship sedan. Adding sharper looks, more power and better handling to its outstanding luxury appointments, this super sedan is being billed as "the most focused, agile and responsive XJ ever made."

The heart of the new XJR is the same 5.0-liter supercharged V8 also found in the XKR-S coupe/convertible. Turning out 550 horsepower compared to the 470-/510-horse alternatives currently available in the upline XJ V8 Supercharged/Supersport models, it features an econo-enhancing Intelligent Start/Stop system that incorporates performance-oriented restart circuitry with "change of mind" capability. Backed by a specially calibrated version of the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission with Corner Recognition and intelligent overtaking logic that allow it to hold a specific gear to optimize performance, this more potent engine can send the new XJR from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and take it to an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph.

To elevate its handling prowess, the new Jaguar XJR gets a comprehensive chassis retune that brings stiffer springs and custom shock absorbers that work with its sophisticated Adaptive Dynamics body control system as well as its recalibrated Electronic Active Differential and Dynamic Stability Control system. The final elements in this enthusiast-oriented mix are grippy Pirelli performance tires -- 265/35 fronts and 295/30 rears - wrapped around lightweight 20-inch forged alloy wheels and a Jaguar High Performance Braking System.

Ensuring that it also looks the part of a first-class Bad Cat, the new XJR boasts a number of visual tweaks. While gloss-black grille inserts and chrome fascia accents add a bit of cosmetic flash, functional upgrades include a more aggressive front splitter, heat-extracting hood vents, aero-optimized side sills and bespoke rear spoiler.

Inside, the new XJR features exclusive R-style sport seats covered in either Jet Black leather or in a two-tone combo with Ivory, London Tan or Red Zone inserts. Completing the look is a Jet Black suede headliner and the choice of Carbon Fiber or Piano Black veneers. Never forgetting its luxury roots, this ultra Jag also comes with an 825-watt/18-speaker Meridian premium surround-sound audio system.

The 2014 Jaguar XJR will arrive in U.S. dealerships later this year. The standard wheelbase model will start at $116,895 while the long-wheelbase XJR will open at $119,875.
