To celebrate the silver anniversary of its legendary M3 model, BMW has created a limited edition model specifically for the U.S. Only 30 of these ultimate 3 Series cars will be built and each 2011 BMW Frozen Gray M3 Coupe will bring an added measure of performance along with its unique visuals.
The Frozen Gray M3 Coupe nomenclature reflects the car's distinctive exterior treatment: matte-gray paint with a deep metallic luster. BMW created the look by covering the car's Space Gray Metallic base coat with its own ColorSystem silk matte clear coat. While likely to appear on other BMWs at some point, this is the only time it will be available on any U.S. 2011 M3 model.
Inside, the 2011 BMW Frozen Gray M3 Coupe receives a Premium Package trimout that brings equally exclusive Novillo leather upholstery in two-tone Fox Red and Carbon Black from the BMW Individual collection. These high-tone hides get complemented by a host of functional enhancements, including an upgraded audio system that includes a year of satellite radio, iPod/USB adapters, heated seats, power folding mirrors and Rear Park Distance Control. Also in the mix is the M3 Technology Package that brings the M Drive system, Comfort Access system and Voice Command activation for the Navigation and Real Time Traffic Information systems.
Although no changes have been made to the 414-horsepower/4.4-liter M-spec V8 under its hood, this icy cool coupe does get a healthy dose of other performance-pumping goodies. For openers, it's fitted with BMW's six-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) which lowers the car's 0-60-mph time from 4.7 seconds compared to 4.5 ticks with the standard six-speed manual gearbox. As a finishing touch, the 2011 BMW Frozen Gray M3 Coupe comes with the Competition Package that brings new springs that lower ride height by 0.4 inch, fits wider-offset 19-inch alloy wheels and further sharpens the standard Electronic Damping Control programming while increasing threshold limits on the various M Dynamic Mode functions.
Fulfilling your Frozen Gray fantasy will require both lucre and luck. On the money front, be prepared to shell out $77,600 -- which in addition to destination and Gas Guzzler fees also includes a one-day stint at the BMW Performance Driving School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Securing a spot in the rather limited reservations cue may prove an even more daunting challenge, as it can only be done by phone. BWM will begin accepting orders for the 30 U.S.-bound Frozen Gray M3 Coupes on a dedicated 1-800-245-4269 number starting at 11:30 AM EDST on Monday, June 21.
