Cash for Clunkers: The Final Stats

The government's Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) was an unexpectedly popular and widely publicized economic stimulus program that ran in July and August 2009. Here are some of the program statistics released by the Department of Transportation a couple days after the program ended.

Number of low-value, fuel-inefficient clunkers swapped for more fuel-efficient new vehicles: 690,114

Total dollar value of the $3,500 and $4,500 credits distributed: $2.9 billion

84 percent of the clunkers were trucks
59 percent of the new vehicles purchased were passenger cars

Average fuel economy of the clunkers: 15.8 miles per gallon
Average fuel economy of the new vehicles: 24.0 miles per gallon

Number of people it took to process the paperwork: More than 2,000
