An evolutionary mid-cycle revamp brings a new look and more performance to the 2014 Buick Regal lineup that makes its debut in New York. Sharing a number of enhanced design elements that parallel those found on the division's larger LaCrosse that receives its own 2014 update, the mid-size Regal sedan also gains a more advanced version of the turbocharged engine in its hotter Turbo and GS variants while adding all-wheel drive to the options roster.

Like the LaCrosse, the 2014 Regal benefits from profile-pumping nose and tail tweaks. A restyled grille is framed by new headlamps that are available as halogen projector beams or bi-xenon HID units, and either can be augmented with wing-style LED running lamps. Out back, new Enclave-like LED taillamps are linked with a chrome accent element that helps emphasize the car's wide stance. The GS takes things one step beyond, getting even-more-aggressive fascia treatments, rocker-panel extensions, a unique rear spoiler and satin-metallic exhaust outlets as well as lower ride height and an upgraded wheel/tire package.

The Regal's cabin adds new main instrument displays - 4.2-inch in the base and Turbo models and a configurable 8.0-inch screen in the top-line Regal GS - as well as a new 8.0-inch touch-screen center display with simplified controls. Premium two-tone leather upholstery is now on offer to add a more sophisticated look, while the available next-gen IntelliLink infotainment system and a new 9-speaker Bose premium audio package further complement the car's elegant ambiance.

In a reprise of safety enhancements introduced on the LaCrosse, the 2014 Regal also offers a pair of new radar- and camera-based Driver Confidence Packages that include Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, HID headlamps with Active Forward Lighting, Head-Up Display, Collision Preparation (with Collision Mitigation Braking), full-range Adaptive Cruise Control and the Safety Alert Seat.

There are no changes to the 182-horsepower/2.4-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine with eAssist used in the base Regal Luxury Sedan, which continues to be paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, it's a different story with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four in the Turbo and GS. While sharing its basic architecture with the current force-fed engine, this 2014 iteration benefits from a host of new internal/external changes that make it smoother, quieter and more efficient, according to Buick. This now single-spec motivator makes 259 horses in both fitments (compared with 220 in the 2013 Regal Turbo and 270 in the 2013 GS) while maintaining the same 295 lb-ft of torque made by the current GS engine. It can be backed by a 6-speed automatic transmission in either model, or a 6-speed manual, which remains a GS exclusive.

As a final powertrain enhancement, the 2014 Regal also will be available with optional all-wheel drive. Interfaced with the StabiliTrak package and an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, this trick on-demand AWD system is capable of sending up to 90 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels and features performance-oriented programming on the GS when switched into "Sport" or "GS" driving modes.

The 2014 Buick Regal lineup is due to arrive in in showrooms this fall. Pricing will be announced closer to the official on-sale date.
