SB-LiMotive Co. Ltd., a 50/50 joint venture between German technology and component giant The Bosch Group and Japan's Samsung SDI, has begun operations to produce Lithium-ion batteries specifically for use in automotive applications. Bosch and Samsung expect the hybrid vehicle market will approach 3 million vehicles by 2015. They have tasked the SB-LiMotive operation with developing a selection of new products and systems that optimize lithium-ion (Li-ion) technology in ways that will make it more efficient, safer and more cost effective with the ultimate goal of permitting future hybrids to travel even greater distances purely on electric power.
