An open-air twist on the hottest version of its stunning R8 GT supercoupe, the Audi R8 GT Spyder is due to hit the streets sometime early in 2012. Being readied for a June preview appearance in conjunction with the 24 Hours of Le Mans, this all-wheel-drive exercise in al fresco ecstasy will be formally introduced at this fall's Frankfurt Auto Show. Few details accompanied the first official illustrations of the Audi R8 GT Spyder. However, expect it to incorporate all of the weight-trimming/performance enhancing modifications seen on the limited-edition R8 GT, as well as share its 552-horsepower/5.2-liter V10 engine, six-speed/paddle-shifted R Tronic dual-clutch transmission, a bespoke version of Audi's fabled Quattro AWD system and a performance-tuned suspension.
Making the open-air transition will no doubt see this extreme Audi undergo a series of focused structural reinforcements along with gaining its foldaway soft top. The Audi R8 GT Spyder will reportedly have a top speed of 193 mph, six less than the R8 GT coupe. Like the closed-top counterpart, production numbers on the Spyder are likely to be held to just 333 units worldwide, and no word yet as to how many we'll see here. Based on R8 GT pricing, expect the Audi R8 GT Spyder to open around $240,000-$250,000.
