Audi Q1 compact SUV confirmed for 2016

Intent on expanding its involvement in a market segment that continues to enjoy continued growth on a global basis, Audi has officially announced that it will add a new entry level model to its "Q" family of SUVs in the form of the new Audi Q1. Set to start rolling off of the production line at the company's main plant in Ingolstadt, Germany, sometime during 2016, it will be part of an ongoing product offensive aimed at increasing the scope of Audi's overall model range from 49 to over 60 by 2020. This year, SUVs are set to account for about 28 percent of the automaker's total production volume, but that figure is projected to rise beyond 35 percent by the end of the decade.

The new Audi Q1 crossover SUV will be based on a version of the versatile MQB modular platform architecture that also underpins the Audi Q3 and the new Volkswagen Golf, among others. Sole teaser illo that accompanied the Audi Q1 release indicates this newcomer will be a 5-door hatch that shares a good deal of its exterior design with the stylish 3-door Audi CrossLane Coupe Concept that was unveiled at the 2012 Paris Auto Show. No word on Q1 powertrains, but it's expected to be available in both standard front-drive and with Audi's signature Quattro all-wheel drive system. Despite Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG indicating the Q1 will be part of a broad-based SUV strategy to strengthen the automaker's overall international competitiveness, there's still no word as to when - or even whether - the vehicle will be sold here in America.
