2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe revealed

A striking visual exercise with technology to match, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe has been unveiled prior to its debut at the Geneva Auto Show next month. An ultra-premium replacement for the existing CL-Class, this range-topping 2-door is a near clone of the Concept S-Class Coupe that was shown in Frankfurt last September.

If bold looks aren't enough, the production S-Class Coupe also introduces a revolutionary "curve-tilting" cornering-assist system. Integrated into the car's Active Body Control suspension, it lets the new S-Class Coupe actually "lean" into a corner in the same way a motorcycle does to improve passenger comfort. While Mercedes has yet to reveal complete details on this new Coupe, we know it will arrive here in the fall in S550 4Matic guise and it's expected that other variants - including an AMG version will follow.

Sharing its basic platform mechanicals with the new S-Class Sedan, the Coupe has a slightly smaller footprint as well as a modestly shorter (116.0-inch vs 119.5-inch) wheelbase. The design is fresh, as the newest member of the S-Class family boasts a far more youthful character that embodies its own high-end take on M-B's latest design language. The divergence is most evident in the S Coupe's front fascia detailing and side sculpting, which more like the entry-level CLA-Class than the automaker's flagship sedan. The tail treatment has a similar flair by using slim-line two-piece LED taillamps to frame a sleek decklid with integral spoiler and a lower diffuser housing dual exhaust outlets. As a finishing touch, the prominently flared fender wells with 18- to 20-inch wheel/tire fitments.

Full LED headlamps are standard on all new S-Class Coupes, but the limited-run Edition 1 S550 models are embellished with 47 Swarovski crystal elements -- 17 that form the daytime running lights and 30 more in the directional indicators. In keeping with CL-Class hardtop tradition, the new S-Class Coupe does not have a B-pillar. However, its standard panorama glass roof element is nearly 50 percent larger than the outgoing CL's and also features M-B's Magic Sky Control that serves up electrochromic lightening/darkening at the touch of a button.

The 2015 S550 4Matic Coupe uses the same 4.7-liter direct-injected twin-turbo V8 engine and 7-speed automatic transmission found in the S-Class Sedan. Rated at 449 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, the engine drives M-B's 4Matic all-wheel drive system. The Coupe also employs Mercedes' Active Body Control (ABC) adaptive suspension - but with one big twist. In addition to the latest version of Magic Body Control with its dual cameras that "read" the road ahead and instantly adjusts damper settings, the Coupe introduces an industry-first innovation for production vehicles in the form of the aforementioned curve-tilting feature.

With curve-tilting active, the S-Class Coupe will lean into a given corner - by up to 2.5 degrees - in a manner that effectively reduces lateral acceleration forces transmitted to passengers. Driver-selectable as part of the car's ABC setup, it can be engaged at speeds between 19-112 mph.

Like the S-Class sedan, the new Coupe also comes with a bevy of M-B pre/post-impact safety features including Collision Prevention Assist. Other items available as part of the comprehensive roster of Intelligent Drive assistance technologies includes a more multi-faceted version of Active Lane Keeping Assist, Distronic Plus with Steering Assist & Brake Assist Plus, Cross Traffic Assist, Pre-Safe Brake with Pedestrian Recognition functionality and Collision Prevention Assist Plus.

Not surprisingly, the basic cabin design of the 2015 S-Class Coupe bears a far stronger resemblance to the new S-Class Sedan than its one-off Concept precursor. While the design of its four well-contoured individual seats is unique, the wraparound dash, dual TFT screen displays and other control layouts - including the new-gen touchpad with gesture-recognition capability - are largely shared with the 4-door. So too is the meticulously crafted appearance, bounty of premium materials, Gen III Command telematics system with navigation and a Burmester surround sound audio system. In addition to an even more stunning Burmester High-End 3D surround sound package, the option list on the S550 4Matic Coupe will include a head-up display as well as Exclusive Nappa designo leather upholstery and trim.

Pricing for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 4Matic Coupe will be announced closer to its on-sale date.
