Making its public debut at the New York Auto Show in April, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe puts a high-performance edge on the new S-Class Coupe unveiled earlier in Geneva. Building on that impressive foundation, this high-intensity sibling offers bolder looks, a more potent bi-turbo V8 and enhanced corner-carving capability -- all served up with typical AMG edge.
Ramping up its visual appeal, the new M-B S63 AMG Coupe boasts a full complement of aerodynamic body bits that extend from its recast front fascia with a deeper splitter to custom 3D-look side sills to a more aggressive rear diffuser housing chrome exhaust tips. The new S63 AMG looks the part inside as well, complementing Nappa leather upholstery with custom AMG sport seats, a flat-bottom AMG-spec steering wheel, aluminum shift paddles and unique AMG instrument cluster graphics.
More power, enhanced economy
Like the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Sedan, motivation for M-B's newest road warrior is provided by a hand-built AMG 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers reflect gains of 41 and 74 output units, respectively, compared to the same-size engine in the outgoing CL63 AMG. Backed by an AMG Speedshift 7-speed sport automatic transmission, it enables the S63 AMG Coupe to sprint 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds and hit 186 mph on the top end.
Despite its extra muscle, Mercedes promises the new S63 will be even more fuel efficient than the CL63. While part of that added frugality comes from the engine's ECO Start/Stop system, a large portion is attributed to the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy, which trimmed curb weight by up to 140 pounds. Key mass reductions come from the use of aluminum front body panels, a lighter lithium-ion battery and optional AMG forged alloy wheels.
4Matic all-wheel drive teamed with AMG chassis revamps
To put its bountiful power to pavement, the new S63 AMG features a performance version of the automaker's 4Matic all-wheel drive system which is standard equipment for the first time. In addition a full AMG chassis retune that includes Airmatic air suspension with ADS Plus adaptive damping, this scintillating coupe also offers M-B's high-performance carbon-ceramic composite brake system as a first-time option.
Arriving in showrooms this fall, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG will take on rivals like the Aston Martin DB9, Bentley Continental GT and Rolls Royce Wraith. Pricing will be released closer to the actual on-sale date. Like the initial run of M-B S550 Coupes, the first of these new S63 AMG models will be available in the more elegant and exclusive "Edition 1" trim level.
