Saluting three decades of awesome performance from the go-fast gang at BMW Motorsport GmbH, the 2015 BMW M5 30th Anniversary Edition puts a high-intensity spin on the M formula. Beyond its unique appearance, the "30 Jahre M5" packs a 600-horsepower version of the M-spec 4.4-liter supercharged V8 making it the most potent BMW production model ever. The 30th Anniversary Edition boasts an additional air of exclusivity: Only 300 copies will be built for the entire world and just 30 of those will head to the U.S.
Finished in Frozen Dark Silver Metallic, the M5 30th Anniversary Edition features an assortment of Black Chrome accents set off with 20-inch bi-color M light-alloy wheels wrapped in sticky 265/35 rubber and "30 Jahre M5" badges on the front fenders. The logo is also found inside on the black Alcantara/Leather sport seats while the console and door panels are trimmed in black Alcantara and the headliner is an anthracite shade of the material. A "30 Jahre M5" sequential-numbered ID plaque is integrated into the aluminum trim strip on the dash.
As for motivation, the M5 30th Anniversary Edition is fitted with a modified version of the TwinPower Turbo engine from the M5 Competition Package. Additional turbo boost and a reprogrammed control module endow this hotter V8 with 25 more ponies -- a bump that nets a 0-60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds. To ensure that added muscle can be put to best use at all times, the standard M5 chassis is upgraded with a specifically calibrated Servotronic transmission and M Dynamic mode. A dedicated control module for the Active M Differential allows it to respond more quickly during cornering.
Pricing for the 2015 BMW M5 30th Anniversary Edition will start at $138,275 and includes a one-day M Driving School at The Thermal Club, a private motorsports facility in Palm Springs, California. However, it will take more than money to park one of these rare M5s in your garage. BMW North America plans to use its Instagram channel (@BMWUSA) to reveal the digits of a special Customer Relations hotline number in bits and pieces from May 17-21. At 1:00PM EST on May 21, the line will go live and the first 29 callers will be able to reserve an M5 30th Anniversary Edition at that time. BMW of North America, LLC plans to hold onto the 30th example which it may choose to sell "at a later date."
