2014 Volkswagens will offer new Car-Net telematics system

Volkswagen has released more details about its new Car-Net telematics system, which will be available on select versions of the 2014 VW Beetle, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat and Tiguan lines. In addition to its various in-car driver-assist features like Roadside Assistance, Automatic Crash Notification, Stolen Vehicle Assistance and Service Appointment Scheduling -- plus Agent Destination Assist on vehicles with factory-installed navigation systems -- Car-Net also can provide a number of other welcome features via a downloadable smartphone app. Launching on iPhone but soon to add Android operating systems, VW's Car-Net mobile app expands the feature set to include a Last Parked Location car finder and also allows owners to perform a host of remote vehicle status checks. All of those Car-Net features also can be accessed via a dedicated online portal.

Pricing for Volkswagen's new Car-Net system will run $199 for one year, $378 for two years or $540 for three years. It will also be offered on a monthly basis for $17.99. VW is quick to note that unlike some other manufacturer's telematics systems that involve extra fees for certain "premium" services, its standard Car-Net prices are all-inclusive.
