2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport teased

Just a fleeting red blur for the moment, but the all-new 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport will be making its world debut later this month at the New York Auto Show when all of the key details will come clearly into focus. What we do know for certain is that the redesigned Range Rover Sport will be the company's "fastest, most responsive and agile vehicle" ever.

According to John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director, the 2014 Sport features design, engineering and technological innovation that will literally take the model to an entirely new level. Unlike the existing Sport that's built on a shortened Land Rover LR4 platform, this new iteration will feature its version of the aluminum-intensive structure that helped its slightly larger 2013 Range Rover sibling shed some 700 pounds as part of a 2013 makeover. With a similar kind of mass-reduction program anticipated for the 2014 Sport, it should enjoy significantly improved overall dynamics while retaining its outstanding go-anywhere 4-wheel drive/Terrain Response systems.

Although far from the most revealing image, the Land Rover Sport teaser pic also indicates we can expect it to arrive on the scene with a bit more visual flair, including an Evoque-like sloping roofline. No word yet on what may be found underhood, but chances are good that the existing 375-horsepower/5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 and 510-horse supercharged variant will be back in place -- although both are now likely to be backed by a new 8-speed ZF automatic transmission in place of the current 6-speed autoshifter.

To help celebrate the arrival of Land Rover's best-selling North American model in its top-selling major metro market area, the automaker is planning a suitably high-profile event for the evening prior to the first New York Auto Show press day. It will center around a 2014 Range Rover Sport being driven through the streets of Manhattan and will be streamed in real time at a dedicated www.newrangeroversport.com microsite.
