Previewed as a prototype in Detroit (pictured above) the 2014 Acura MDX will make its production debut at the 2013 New York Auto Show. While offering no new visual teasers, the automaker has dropped a few tech details to tide us over until next week. As indicated in Detroit, the third-generation MDX is based on an all-new unitized platform that's stiffer, stronger and safer than ever before. Continuing to feature standard 3-row seating, it will offer more interior volume thanks to a longer wheelbase as well as improved comfort and better handling courtesy of its redesigned suspension system. Another big change for the new MDX is the availability of front-wheel drive, a lower cost alternative aimed at attracting a new group of buyers who don't want or need its currently mandatory SH-AWD (Super Handling All-wheel Drive) package.

Motivation for the 2014 Acura MDX will come from a new 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine fitted with Variable Cylinder Management that promises even greater torque and significantly better fuel economy than the 3.5-liter used in the 2013 MDX. Also in the mix are loads of tech touches that include a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, Lane Keeping Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning systems, and Blind Spot Information.
