2013 Tesla Model S: LA to Vegas the Hard Way (VIDEO)

It's been quite a first year for Tesla's second electric car.

First the Model S grabbed big headlines for winning car of the year honors from at least a couple enthusiast publications. An ability to launch from zero to 60 mph in about four seconds didn't hurt its cause.

More recently it was at the center of a kerfuffle between The New York Times and Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk. The Times ran a story detailing a road trip filled with range and charging issues, with which Musk took issue and eventually released data he said told a different story, straight from the vehicle itself. The parties involved seem to have made nice, The Times offering a quasi-apology for which Musk expressed his appreciation.

Somewhere between those awards and that drive, we took our own road trip in a 2013 Tesla Model S. We set out for a quick roundtrip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, a voyage made possible by a quick-charging Supercharger strategically located in Barstow, California.

Fortunately for Mr. Musk we brought along the video cameras, because a written account of this trip would surely send him straight to our car's trip computer.
