According to the latest official EPA-certified numbers, the just-launched 2013 Ford Fusion Energi has rolled into the limelight as America's most fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid sedan. Like the recently introduced Ford C-Max Energi with which it shares basic powertrain/platform elements, the Fusion Energi earns 108 MPGe city/92 MPGe highway ratings and nets a 100 MPGe combined stat. That bests the combined figure of its chief rival, the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, by 5 MPGe and also tops the Chevrolet Volt's collective total by 2 MPGe.

"The Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid is the exclamation point for Ford's transformed lineup of fuel-efficiency leaders that now beats Toyota across the board," said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development. However it remains to be seen whether the new Fusion Energi will retain that top-rated status when the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid hits the streets in early 2013. Honda is projecting that the most efficient version of its best-selling 4-door also will have a combined MPGe number that eclipses the century mark.
