Incorporating many of the visual and mechanical aspects originally seen on the Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept shown at Detroit in January 2010, the production-spec 2013 Cadillac XTS made its eagerly-awaited debut in Los Angeles. Due to launch next spring, this super-lux large sedan will replace the discontinued STS and DTS models in Cadillac's lineup and promises to usher in a new era of elegant excellence for GM's premium division.
Expanding on the Art & Science design theme, the car's tightly rendered lines and powerful contours book-ended by a prominent grille and Cadillac's signature vertical head and taillamps give this new range-topper undeniable presence. But the sumptuously appointed and exceptionally spacious passenger compartment is what Cadillac feels is destined to set the XTS apart from its rivals.
According to Don Butler, the division's vice president of marketing, the cabin represents "a new formula for luxury, driven by technology." The biggest leap will be the introduction of the new CUE interface (Cadillac User Experience) as standard equipment. This simple, intuitive man-machine interaction element will offer easy access to all kinds of infotainment via an 8.0-inch color touch screen in the center stack which can be controlled by the multifunction steering wheel or haptic feedback buttons on the display itself. The main instrument cluster in the XTS will be a 12.3-inch configurable display screen. The latest version of On Star with MyCadillac and myLink mobile apps also will be included in the standard feature set.
The 2013 Cadillac XTS will be powered by an advanced, lightweight direct-injected 3.6-liter/300-horsepower V6 with integrated cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds. Backed by a six-speed automatic transmission that offers tap-shift control, it will send that motivational force to all four wheels using an advanced Haldex all-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. Underpinning the Cadillac XTS is a smoother and precise Magnetic Ride Control system that matches torque-steer banishing front HiPer Struts up front with rear air suspension. Super-capable Brembo brakes also are standard issue, as are 19-inch alloy wheels, with 20-inch options.
In addition to a long list of conventional safety features that include StabiliTrak, the XTS will offer two Enhanced Safety Strategy (ESS) packages that bring everything from Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert and Forward Collision Alert to low-speed Front and Rear Automatic Braking capability, Adaptive Cruise Control and Automatic Collision Preparation along with a color Head-up display.
"The more you look, the more layers you see in XTS," said Butler. "They aren't always apparent to the eye, but they build on one another in important ways to reinforce the car's strength of design, comfort and driving experience."
