Coinciding with the 40th birthday of the world's most storied SUV, Land Rover released information on the 2011 Range Rover. The flagship of its go-anywhere fleet receives minor visual tweaks plus a handful of functional enhancements and adds a distinctive limited edition to commemorate this signature coming of age moment.

Exterior revamps for the basic 2011 Range Rover come in the form of new "Jupiter-style" grille inserts and side vents for the naturally-aspirated models. Mechanically, the already super-capable dual-range all-wheel drive system gets bolstered through the addition of new Gradient Acceleration Control and Hill Start Assist features on both the 375-horsepower naturally aspirated HSE model and the 510-horse Supercharged (S/C) variant.

The 2011 Range Rover's option roster also picks up some meaningful enhancements, including a new 1200-watt/19-speaker harman/kardon premium audio system available with the Autobiography Package. The HSE with Luxury Package and Supercharged models now come with a power-reclining rear seat. On the Range Rover S/C with the Autobiography Package, it also features internal heating/cooling, airline-style winged head restraints and four-way adjustable lumbar support. As a finishing touch, new laminated rear-door privacy glass makes the spacious aft quarters even more serene on all models.

Turning forty with elite élan

Headlining the Range Rover lineup is the 2011 Autobiography Black 40th Anniversary Limited Edition. Taking up where the existing Autobiography package leaves off, this ultra-exclusive Supercharged-only iteration sets off its Barolo Black paint with a unique Titan-mesh grille insert and bright/black surround, special bright/black side vents, body color door handles and 20-inch Diamond Turned alloy wheels. Inside, there's a choice of standard Jet leather or two Autobiography Black-only Jet/Ivory or Jet/Pimento trimouts set off by Grand Black accent wood on the doors and steering wheel, special door sill plates and a gaggle of Autobiography Black logos to complement the badging that appears on its tailgate.

Expect the entire Land Rover lineup to be in dealers by the fall. While the Range Rover HSE will start at $79,685 and the Range Rover Supercharged is set to open at $95,465, pricing has yet to be released on the Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Black 40th Anniversary Limited Edition.
