Two weeks ago, Ford announced that the base V6 version of its new 2011 Mustang had become the first production car with over 300 horsepower to snare an EPA highway rating that topped 30 mpg. Today, the automaker released official fuel economy stats for its upline V8-powered Mustang GT. Although absolute mileage figures for the GT's new all-aluminum 412-horse/5.0-liter understandably fall below those of the 305-horse/3.7-liter V6, they still top the numbers generated by the 315-horse/4.6-liter V8 used in the 2010 GT. More importantly, they're also high enough to net the latest iteration Mustang GT at least marginal EPA ratings supremacy compared to its two V8 segment rivals: the Chevrolet Camaro SS and the Dodge Challenger, in both R/T and SRT8 iterations.
Officially, the 2011 Ford Mustang GT Coupe returns 17 mpg on the EPA's city cycle and 26 mpg on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission and earns 18/25 mpg ratings when fitted with the optional six-speed automatic. Like the V6, a good bit of the new 5.0-liter V8's exemplary efficiency comes from the fitment of Ford's Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) setup coupled with well-tuned intake and exhaust plumbing that optimizes its breathing throughout the rev range and contributes to a healthy 390 lb.-ft. of peak torque. The other key to the V8's mileage-maxing magic lies in being paired up with Ford's newly designed six-speed transmissions.
As for the Mustang GT's foes, the 6.2-liter V8 in the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS makes 426 horsepower and earns 16/24 mpg figures when backed by its standard six-speed manual gearbox. A 400-horse version matched with the optional six-speed autoshifter nets 16/25 mpg EPA marks. The 2010 Dodge Challenger comes in two distinct V8 variants. The R/T's 5.7-liter Hemi that corrals 376 ponies when backed by a six-speed manual carries 15/24 mpg city/highway EPA numbers while the 372-horse/six-speed autoshifted version merits 16/25 mpg marks. The SRT8's 6.1-liter/426-horse Hemi nets 14/22 mpg figures when paired with its mandatory six-speed manual transmission.
