2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Limited Edition -- First look
Chrysler has confirmed that it will have a serious presence at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show in Las Vegas next week. But In addition to an assortment of one-off concepts, the automaker will formally unveil at least one high-energy limited edition production model, the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392. Beyond distinctive cosmetics, this Hemi-fortified hauler boasts 2011-spec upgrades that will endow all new SRT8 models with more sheer firepower as well as even better handling. While several details have yet to be revealed, the basics are in place and promise the Mopar faithful even more of a good thing.
Heart of the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 is a new iteration of the venerable Hemi V8, which has been upsized from 6.1 to 6.4 liters. Now displacing 392 cubic inches -- same as the classic Gen II Hemi that was introduced in 1957 and went on to become a staple of drag racers around the world -- this bigger, badder motivator makes 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque -- gains of 45 and 50 units, respectively, over the outgoing 6.1 liter. As before, the new 6.4-liter engine can be paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or five-speed autoshifter. Choose the latter, and this new Hemi also will come with the Multiple Displacement System cylinder deactivation setup used on the carryover 5.7-liter Hemi. In either case, inside sources indicate that despite the extra muscle, fuel economy figures for the 6.4-liter will equal or surpass the existing numbers.
Dodge engineers also tweaked the chassis bits on the SRT8. Recalibrated shock damping and suspension geometry coupled with changes to the power steering are said to endow the car with greater overall agility and controllability while providing the driver more direct feedback.
Exterior distinction on the 1,492 Inaugural Edition 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392s will come primarily from the choice two unique exterior color treatments, either Deep Water Blue with standard Stone White stripes or Bright White Clear Coat with standard Viper Blue stripes. Other "SRT8 392" specifics include a larger, aero-enhancing front splitter, integrated front fender spats, body-color rear decklid spoiler, quad exhaust outlets, custom 20-inch SRT-exclusive alloy wheels and special "392 HEMI" badging on the front fenders. Inside, the Inaugural Edition cars will all feature Smooth Pearl White leather-trimmed seats with dual blue accent stripes, blue contrast stitching and "392" embroidered in the front-seat headrests. As a finishing touch, each will carry a serialized "Inaugural Edition 392 HEMI" dash plaque, showing its place in the sequential build.
Pricing and EPA numbers for the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Inaugural Edition as well as all of its new Challenger stablemates is expected to be released within the next two weeks.
