Arguably the most exciting bit of possibility thinking displayed by the Bowtie Boys at this-year's SEMA Show, the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06X Track Car Concept puts an even finer edge on the potential that lurks within America's most iconic sportscar. Done in conjunction with race aces Pratt and Miller, it's elevates the basic goodness of the standard 2011 Corvette Z06 with 1LZ equipment package by adding elements from the Z07 Performance Package and CFZ Carbon Fiber Package as well as numerous other custom enhancements.
Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer, sees the vehicle as a natural extension of the street car's character. "Racing is an integral part of Corvette performance and technology. This concept car represents a mid-point between our GT racer and the production Z06. It was prepared by the team responsible for our Corvette Racing C6.R race cars, and features many performance parts owners can choose today."
What makes the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06X Track Car Concept so special? The most visible aspect is its unique bodywork. Finished in low-gloss Ice White Metallic, it incorporates loads of the aforementioned mass-minimizing carbon fiber. Key ultralight elements include splitters and rockers from the 2011 CFZ-option package, a unique adjustable rear wing, ZR1 roof and B-pillar panels, a raised hood from the Z06 Carbon Limited Edition as well as carbon-fiber headlamp housings from Specter Werkes/Sports. One other prime weight reducer is a race-spec C6.R polycarbonate rear window in place of the standard glass unit.
Inside this one-off Ultra-Vette modifies its as-delivered Z06 LT1 trim by jettisoning the radio, carpeting and sound deadener while adding a full SCCA roll cage, fire suppression system, racing seat with five-point harness, on-board video camera, driver's drink system, racing pedal kit and a window net.
While the Z06's 7.0-liter/505-horsepower LS7 V8 remains paired with a six-speed Tremec manual transmission, here, it breathes through a low-restriction air intake and gains a heavy-duty radiator/cooling system. Handling on the Corvette Z06X Track Car Concept is optimized through the use of fully-adjustable coil-over struts, mono-ball control arm bushings and adjustable stabilizer bars while a new-for-2011 Z07 Performance Package nets massive Brembo carbon-ceramic brake rotors and special pads. Keeping it all tied to the track are lightweight staggered-diameter (19.0-inch front/20.0-inch rear) alloy wheels wrapped with Michelin racing rubber.
