The latest in the long line of BMWs to get the high-performance M treatment -- but the first-ever all-wheel-drive models to wear that designation -- the 2010 X5 M and X6 M will take center stage in New York this week. Both of these Sports Activity Vehicles are powered by a new twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that cranks out 555 horses at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1,500-5,650 revs. This direct-injected jewel, which will also see duty in future M5/M6 models, is the first to use a BMW-patented pulse-tuned exhaust manifold and has is twin-scroll turbochargers positioned between the cylinder banks to minimize pressure losses and effectively eliminate turbo lag. Backed by a paddle-shifted six-speed M Sports Automatic transmission and BMW's proprietary xDrive system, either of the new M cars can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Both also share a specially tuned Adaptive Drive suspension and Dynamic Performance Control that BMW
claims delivers an unmatched combination of cornering capability and control. The more aggressive bodywork and 20-inch wheels on these speedy SAVs are complemented by a similarly focused and functional M-style interior enhancements.
