While full details won't be made public until later this week, Mitsubishi has confirmed that the Outlander GT Prototype will be the centerpiece of its exhibit in New York. (POST-SHOW UPDATE: Mitsubishi didn't say much more than what we covered in this preview.) Better still, a strikingly similar production variant of this compact crossover is virtually certain to turn up in dealer showrooms as a 2010 Outlander model. For the moment, Mitsu remains mum about specifics, but we do know that the Outlander GT's bolder front end styling handsomely expands on the Lancer/EVO theme, including the prominent "Jet Fighter" grille -- and that it retains the Outlander's lightweight aluminum roof panel that helps lower its center of gravity to improve handling. Arrayed in Diamond White paint, the GT show vehicle also introduces several new technologies that we can expect to see in production. Heading the list is an advanced Super All-Wheel-Control-System with a trick electronic front differential, a more potent and more fuel-efficient version of the 3.0-liter MIVEC V6 engine and Idle Neutral Logic that automatically pops the transmission into neutral when the vehicle is stopped to save additional fuel.
