2009 LA Auto Show: Nissan V2G Named Design Challenge Winner

While it may not always generate the most practical of transportation solutions, the annual Design Challenge held in conjunction with the Los Angeles Auto Show can be counted on to deliver thought-provoking eye candy. This year's competition proved one of the best as top creative teams from Audi, GM, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota were tasked with looking two decades into the future to come up with their take on what would constitute the ideal "Youthmobile 2030." The entries spanned everything from vehicles that incorporate human DNA that lets them change shape, color and even their materials to transport modules that precisely respond to even the smallest gestures and movements of their drivers. In the end, the Nissan V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid), a low-cost, high-styled electric vehicle with lots of untapped off-grid potential, was chosen for its "holistic approach in answering the future's design questions." The selection, done by a panel of multi-discipline design professionals, singled out the V2G "based on its originality of creative concept, integration of futuristic design elements and level of adaptation to the needs of the youth consumer in 2030." Chuck Pelly, director of Design Los Angeles and partner in The Design Academy, Inc. "In the end, it came down to which team had the most inventive and solution-oriented design.
