Americans never got a chance to experience the original Cube, a funky little econobox that puttered around Japan in the late 90s. For 2009, Nissan plans to bring its compact Cube stateside where it will no doubt garner as many accolades as raised eyebrows. Aimed squarely at the blossoming youth market, the quirky Cube stands apart from all other automotive life forms with such unconventional styling cues as an asymmetrical wrap-around rear window and refrigerator-style rear doors. Powered by a 122-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, Nissan predicts the Cube will get about 30 mpg with either its continuously variable automatic transmission or six-speed manual. The five-passenger Cube places an emphasis on efficient storage and maximum cabin comfort, and offers a number of cool options such as keyless start with push button ignition, a Rockford Fosgate subwoofer and rear sonar parking assist. Nissan also plans to offer unique accessories allowing for further customization. The Cube is expected to arrive in dealerships Spring 2009 with an expected starting price around $14,000.
