The biggest change in the 2012 LaCrosse is standard eAssist, which marries an 11 Kw (15-hp) electric motor to a 182-hp 2.4-liter Ecotec four driving a six-speed automatic transmission. It's good for a 20-percent improvement in EPA highway fuel economy and an impressive 32-percent boost in city economy over the 2011 four-cylinder LaCrosse. If you prefer horsepower to hybrid power, a lighter and more powerful (than last year) 303-hp 3.6-liter V6 is a no-cost option.
The LaCrosse finds itself surrounded by an ever-increasing field of sporty and capable competitors. It has not been the smash success for which Buick was hoping, and the division has had to reconfigure its midsize sedan by offering a wider range of features, as well as more competitive pricing. On paper, the LaCrosse appears equal to such market heavyweights as the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata and Honda Accord, matching them in power, features and interior volume. Unfortunately, the LaCrosse's conservative styling hampers its ability to lure foreign car converts and younger buyers, a situation likely to become even more dire with the arrival of the very attractive new Chrysler Sebring.

"I love my 2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS! Fun to drive! Has a great navigation system and a wonderful sound system. Have owned Buicks for years, but this is my first experience with the smaller version and I'm completely satisfied. By the way, I'll be 78 years old on my next birthday."

Pros: "V6 has lots of power; 6-speed auto trans is smooth; excellent handling; very nice interior"
Cons: "Rear view is someone restricted; but reverse sensing system helps overcome this."

"I am very happy with my LaCrosse CXL. The car offers a lot of features I wouldn't have expect on a car in this price range. Performance is excellent and the V6 engine gives more than enough power while maintaining good mileage for a car as heavy as the LaCrosse (I got 32 MPG on a recent trip to Boston). The interior is luxurious; everything is soft and inviting; the seats are very comfortable and the ambient lighting adds a nice touch. This car is a winner and definitely not your grandfather's Buick. If GM can continue to makes cars like this they have a customer for life in me."

"What were they thinking when they made this car? I should have gotten the backup camera. Yes, it is a beautiful vehicle; however, my visibility when backing up is very poor. My general visibility when driving this care is not good. I have a 4 cylinder engine, and my mileage is only 19.2 mpg for city driving. I receive compliments on what a great looking car I have. I like the look of the interior and the exterior."
