Pros: "Fun to drive, nice utility, AWD in poor weather."

Cons: "Poor quality in key engine/tranny components"

"I can sum up my review by saying that I love the X3 but would never own another BMW because of it. Strange to say that right? The utility, design, feel, etc are great and we have enjoyed driving the car but due to inexcusable poor quality on certain items, mostly under the hood, it's not worth owning. As stated in the title, if you're looking to lease or own one up to about 60,000 miles then you're fine, above that and there are several items that will fail necessitating $700-$1000 repairs unless you do some of them yourself. Here is the list: 1) Transfer case actuator gear. Small plastic gear in the transfer case actuator that will fail, no question. Not catastrophic but a dealer will want $1000 to fix it. You can get a gear yourself for about $30 and fix it if you're into working on your own car. Check this thread for more on that: http://hubpages.com/autos/BMW-Transfer-Case-Actuator-Problem-And-Fix 2) Lean Engine Code faults, any number of reasons from cracks in the air intake boot, failed DISA valve, or the very expensive and inevitable oil separator clog/failure. 3) Oil leaks, again any one or all of the following will happen: oil filter housing gasket will fail, oil pan gasket will fail (min $1000), valve cover gasket will fail. 4) Coolant expansion tank cracks. The BMW dealer here actually says you need to replace this above 60k miles or so because the plastic tank cracks? Really? How many other cars does this happen to ... the ALL have plastic tanks. That's a starter list, and all of which are totally INEXCUSABLE quality issues. Failed plastic parts and gaskets ... that cost $1000s. If you're into that then by all means own a BMW. Like I said, I like the car, but would never own another one."

Pros: "good brakes and firm ride"

Cons: "terrible reliability on systems and components"

"I have owned 5 BMW's in the last 30 years starting with a 1986 3 series, my last 2008 X3 is the worst one and the last one I will ever own, before 100,000 miles, engine oil leaks, body water leaks, various engine sensor failures, spark plug coil failures, and the Dealer told me I needed to replace the transmission at a cost of 9 grand. BMW are not the Ultimate Driving Machine, they are the Ultimate Maintenance Machine"

Pros: "Fun to drive, great initial quality"

Cons: "Limited interior storage, somewhat noisy cabin"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 8

"This is a crossover that drives like a sports sedan. For sheer driving fun, no other SUV/SAV and not even many sedans compare to this. Engine is smooth with plenty of power and handling is tack-sharp. Has all the comfort features you'd want and has been super-reliable so far. That said, X3s have some known-issues that come with higher mileage. So far I have had to replace oil and valve gaskets, some pumps, CCV, servomotor and some plastic hoses. Fortunately they are fairly inexpensive repairs and I'd rather spend that money than be in something that drives like a shopping cart."
