"I bought this car in 2009 with about 12,000 miles for $25,000. I have only put about 20,000 miles on it in about 6 years. I live in Panama City, Panama in central america. Parts for this car are very expensive here, so I get a lot of my parts new from Amazon or used from E Bay. In 2010 I spent about $5,000 in a mechanic to replace struts, shocks, spark plugs, and a whole lot of other stuff. In 2015 I had to replace my transmission which only had about 30,000 miles on it. I also had to replace the valve body at the same time. That cost me about $5,000. I also replaced my alternator this year. I had a problem with it. The car would start indicating many faults and would shut off. It has been a very reliable car except for the 2 major repair jobs that I have had to do. I must admit that I am apprehensive about having any major computer problems with this car because that would be very expensive and the 745i is loaded with computers. It seems that in 2015 I have had to replace many parts. I had to replace the radiator receptacle tank, Xenon head lights, IVN or Integrated Supply module. both sides of the head valve cover gaskets because there was a serious oil leak all over the engine in the sides and underneath engine, and replaced the upper radiator hose because of a leak. So in 2015 I have spent about $7,800 on these repairs. Now the labor rate in Panama is much lower than in the USA. Where something in the USA would cost me $1,100 in labor it cost me $350.00 in Panama. Now in the previous years my cost were nominal. It was only costly in 2010 and 2015. The other years was your normal oil change or new tire expense. So in the 6 years of ownership I have spent a total of about $15,000 or $2,500 per year in repairs."

When I bought it , looks as good today as it did then.

"I bought my 06 750 CPO with very low miles, originally under CPO warranty a bunch of repairs were needed within few months of ownership (gas gauge was bad, computer needed reprogramming, etc) nothing major after that it was just regular stuff (oil change, fluid flushes, brakes, maintenance items basically) until 90,000 miles.
at 90K miles my water pump went bad not too bad as far as cost go.
at close to 100K miles,

1-thermostat needs changing due to a gasket leak (the thermostat is fine but have to change due to gasket leak). Surprisingly cheap to fix this part.
2-pan gasket needs changing (not bad price wise).
3-Alternator bracket gasket (this one is expensive due to 10-14hours of work needed to reach the part).
Overall the 06 was reliable (compared to other lux cars I own) I think there are 2 things to watch out for. The pre-facelift version of this car (05 and older) have more problems. These were the first version much improvement was made with 06 and up.
You have to maintain the car by the right service provider. The car has very complex systems that you cant just take to your friendly mechanic at 1/2 the price to fix. Well he will fix it with aftermarket from chain auto parts stores and not do a few things BMW specialist will know about to do and there goes a bag of worms you dont want to open.
It is true the parts are expensive but they are higher grade components (compared to say toyota).
It is true labor for BMW mechanic is higher than say Toyota.
but it is also true that if you drive this car and you love cars and driving (not to get from point a to point b but really love driving) this car will be your dream come true.
I have owned Acura's, Lexus's, MB's and all have their benefits. Acura's were the most reliable ones out of the bunch. I would still buy this car.
You get what you pay for. If you are looking at cost of ownership and thats all that matters to you then go with acura or lexus. If you want a TRUE Luxury sports sedan that wont leave you stranded buy a well maintained BMW 750. I have driven my car HARD and it has been a pleasure driving this car. Has never left me stranded not even once. The paint looks as good today as it did the day I bought it. The car does not age as fast as other cars. It still looks super good and I get compliments on it at times (it looks amazing with 21" bmw star 128 rims). So moral of the story is, 1.do not take it to any mechanic 2.if you must save money on parts buy parts recommended in forums like bimmerfest rather than general chain stores. German OEM parts recommended by people on forums are a lot cheaper but not as cheap as the chain auto part stores. 3-do not buy if your only objective is to get from point a to point b. This is not your car get a MB or Lexus for that. 4-Keep it maintained or pay the price."

BMW 745i 2005

"The BMW 745i is a classic car with all the convenience of a luxury car. Although I live in Panama, where the roads have a lot of pot holes and the roads are not the best. At about 17,000 miles I had to have the complete suspension system replaced and spent about $3000 in parts and $2000 in labor to get it fixed. At about 30,000 miles I had to have the transmission replaced or rebuilt and also had to have the valve body replaced. I spent about $4,700, of which $700 was for the valve body valves. It is a fast car and a very comfortable car for long drives. But I live in a city with lots of stop and go traffic. It is a 2005 model and I only have 31,780 miles on it. Parts for the car are expensive, so plan on spending money to have parts replaced or fixed. An oil change in Panama can cost me about $120 in oil alone from BMW. The car handles like a smaller sports car yet it is a sedan. It is very very fast. It handles and corners very well. It has a strong engine. I had to replace the top and lower valve cover gaskets because the car was leaking oil badly. Labor alone in Panama cost me $350.00. I've had to replace the alternator and belts. I have had to replace electronic parts for the trunk of the car and add hydraulic oil to the system. It has an automatic trunk open and close feature. Over all it is a good car, but not built for the roads and traffic of Panama. It is built to be driven on the freeways in the USA."

"Have driven BMWs since 1990. Had an "88 M5 E34 and was hit by a drunk driver that crunched the car in half and saved my life. Would only buy a BMW after. Tried to get back into a 5; maybe the shock of the accident, but when I drove the 7, I felt safe. The comfort of this car is great with the extended seats (I'm tall). iDrive makes it easy to manage the car from a single point ... outstanding. I have LOW PROFILE staggered wheels, keeps the car low to the ground with a tight drive. Have not had problems with my car. Under warranty: exhaust replaced at 2 yrs. It has 166k miles on it and as long as I keep up the oil changes get 19 city, 25 hwy. My mechanic can't believe it. Had the oil pan changed a yr ago, the rear shade recently broke, hmmm, nothing else to date. I have people stop me on the street offering me $ for the car. Still not for sale and I'll keep it as long as it drives. Excellent ride, short or long."
