2007 BMW 6 Series Review

By

High-powered, high-profile and highly desirable, BMW's premium 650i Coupe makes an exclusive statement in a very exclusive realm. While a few of its styling details may be open to some rather heated debate, there's no denying that this 2+2 offers a stunning driving experience for those who can afford its price of entry. A potent V8 engine, superbly responsive chassis and exceptional amenities make it a serious competitor to prestige coupes from Jaguar, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, in many cases delivering more absolute performance for considerably less money when comparably equipped.

You'll Like This Car If...

If the exhilarating rush of a big V8-powered coupe that handles with the confidence of a world-class GT car sets your sporting senses tingling, you'll love the 650i Coupe. A choice of manual or automatic transmissions, exceptional interior amenities and desirable options should please even the most demanding enthusiast.

You May Not Like This Car If...

Those who find fault with the styling of the 650i Coupe's rear quarters, or who are put off by the complexity of its iDrive system - that integrates control of the audio, ventilation, navigation and communication functions - might want to consider a Jaguar XK8 or Porsche 911 Carrera S. If you're looking for a more usable back seat, the Mercedes-Benz CLK550 would be a better choice.

What's New for 2007

In a largely carryover year, a tire pressure monitor, real-time traffic info and an auxiliary iPod/MP3 input jack join the long list of 650i Coupe standard equipment, while distinctively-patterned, ultra-supple Pearl leather becomes an option in place of the base Dakota leather. The W-rated performance tires are replaced by V-rated all-season rubber, the premium Logic7 audio system transitions to a stand-alone upgrade with the departure of the Premium Sound Package and both a six-disc CD changer and dedicated iPod interface are now available as dealer-installed accessories.

Driving the 6 Series
Driving Impressions

The 650i Coupe shares basic chassis elements with the 5 Series Sedan, but its 4.3-inch shorter wheelbase and slightly wider rear track dimension add an extra measure of...

... agility and surefootedness, while a host of computerized "active" control elements - from stability to traction to the anti-roll bars themselves - ensures it maintains that superb composure on virtually any kind of road. Although the suspension is tuned more for control than pure comfort, the 650i is still a first-rate cruiser. The silky 360-horsepower V8 takes it from zero to 60 mph in just about 5.5 seconds, regardless of whether it's backed by the conventional six-speed manual, BMW's six-speed SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) or the six-speed automatic with Steptronic shift control.

Dynamic Driving Control
At the push of a button, this 650i Coupe's electronic performance wizard engages a "Sport" mode that brings quicker response to accelerator inputs, and more aggressive shifting programs to both the Steptronic and SMG transmissions, while reducing the overall power assist on the standard Servotronic steering system.

Tilting Glass Panel Roof
The 650i's Tilting Glass Panel Roof with electric sliding sunshade lets in plenty of light and flips up at the rear to help improve airflow through the passenger compartment.

Comfort and convenience touches abound inside the 650i Coupe, headed by its well-contoured 12-way power bucket seats and on-board computer/navigation system. Standard Dakota leather upholstery is set off with high-tech Pearl-gloss Ruthenium accent trim, but BMW offers Dark or Light Birch wood as no-charge alternatives for buyers with more traditional tastes. Even with its rakish roofline, the 650i has sufficient room for taller drivers up front, although some may find that the steering wheel rim obscures the top of the gauge faces, even when adjusted to its full-up position. Rear seats are typical 2+2 fare - scaled strictly for kids, and smaller ones at that.

Exterior
2007 BMW 6 Series photo

One of the most expressively styled BMWs, the 650i Coupe maintains the long, low nose and short rear-deck treatments that have characterized other classic coupes from this marque, but incorporates lots of aluminum and thermoplastic panels to help reduce weight. Its laid-back windshield and sweeping roofline are smartly complemented by bold fender flares that add to the aggressive character. Although the Coupe's tail treatment and trunk lid remain points of minor controversy for some, its overall visual impact - especially when fitted with the optional Sport Package that bumps the wheel/tire fitment from 18-inch to 19-inch alloy rims with even larger, lower-profile tires - is undeniably impressive.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

The 650i Coupe's standard features include a dual automatic climate control system, DVD-based navigation with iDrive integrated controller, a multifunction steering wheel, power tilt/telescoping column, programmable keyless remote entry, corner-following Xenon Adaptive Headlamps, Adaptive Brake Lights (that indicate your stopping intensity to vehicles following behind), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), electronically modulated Active Roll Stabilization, Dynamic Driving Control (that quickens throttle and shift responses), advanced anti-lock brakes, run-flat tires and a no-charge choice of the manual, the automatic or the Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG), all with six speeds. Dual front/front-side airbags are matched with BMW's Head Protection System and Active Knee Protection airbags.

Optional Equipment

Owners can personalize their 650i Coupes with features like Active Steering (that makes it easier to maneuver in confined areas and adds more confident feel at higher speeds), Comfort Access automatic locking/unlocking, distance-maintaining Active Cruise Control, a premium Logic7 Surround Sound audio system, High Definition and SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Head-Up Display and thermal imaging Night Vision. A Cold Weather Package (heated front seats/steering wheel, ski bag) and Sport Package (19-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, eight-way power sport seats, Shadowline exterior trim) also are available.

Under the Hood

The 650i Coupe's all-aluminum 4.8-liter V8 makes an outstanding 360 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. It incorporates both variable valve timing and variable valve lift to help optimize performance throughout a wide rev range, delivering super-quick response and respectable fuel economy with all three of the available six-speed transmissions. Near-silent at idle, the engine emits a beautifully rich and throaty roar at full throttle, thanks in part to a movable element in the exhaust system that imparts an edgier character to the sound under higher load conditions. For maximum enthusiast appeal, the electronically-controlled SMG clutchless manual transmission also offers racing-style, steering wheel-mounted paddle shift levers.

4.8-liter V8
360 horsepower @ 6300 rpm
360 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3400 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24 (manual), 17/25 (automatic), 16/22 (SMG manual)

"Can't say enough good things about this car. It is luxurious, beautiful, and an amazing ride. It is so hard to find big german v8's with a real stick shift these days. I love the feeling of shifting this car, it is so unique. Great for long freeway runs, actually gets good gas mileage and has tons of power in 6th gear (meant for the autobahn I guess...)"

Beautiful but unreliable

"This car's engines are very delicate and unreliable. Known for leaking oil. Electronics are very complex and upgrades have to be done on a yearly basis. Save yourself a headache and don't buy this car. 335i is a much more reliable vehicle. Any Mercedes Benz is a great buy!"

"I have had this car for 7 years and never a lick of problems. I've owned 928 Porsches, Vantage Aston and Ferraris - They got it right with this vehicle. Bro In Law has the ten Cylinder and it is not any stronger than my 8."

Pros: "Great handling, power and responsiveness."

Cons: "Routine maintenance cost are expensive."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"This was my first BMW (2006 650i convertible). Purchased with low miles for a great price. Only disappointment is the trim in the door and the trim that surrounds the rear seats. Vinyl trim is very susceptible to tears from either wear or things snagging. Almost all the 6 series I looked at prior to purchase had tears or cuts in the trim. If you take care of the interior, it will last for many years to come with minimal wear, but if you neglect it, the wear will be evident. The car drives like a dream. This is my fourth German car. I have owned 2 Audi A8s, Mercedes E500 and a VW CC. This BWM is awesome in power, handling and responsiveness. Convertible top movement up and down is quiet. Can easily complete top action at a stoplight. Visibility is great despite the small rear window. I am 6'2" and I am very comfortable in the car. Seats are supportive and extremely comfortable. Thigh support could extend further for my height. Sound system is phenomenal. I have the Harmon Kardon upgraded sound system and it is great. Bluetooth with top up is great. Very quiet to person on the other end. With the top down, if you are below 60 mph with the windows up, not very noticeable on the receiver end. Above 60 mph, wind noise gets picked up by microphone on center console. No issues hearing the other person at any speed. Cabin is very quiet with minimal wind with windows up at speeds above 80 mph. My one complaint is parking. Due to low profile, must be extremely careful not to damage front bumper on tire stops in parking lots and backup parking is tough to judge due to higher rear trunk. I always end up further away from rear object than I anticipated. Backup sensors keep you safe, red means you are 2-3 feet away. Car is awesome and if you can afford the maintenance cost to maintain it, you cannot go wrong with a 6 series."

Pros: "Sexy!"

Cons: "One cup holder :("

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"This is such a sexy car and is a terrific driving experience. This year is no frills on the interior with a standard stereo system, basic leather seating and only one cup holder. Guess you're just supposed to drive it..I have had numerous mechanical issues after the 5 year mark and if not for an extended warranty, I would have been out of pocket over $10k. Just put on new set of tires an switched to performance tires that are not run flat...made a big difference and a more comfortable ride. It's a fun car to drop the top and get some open air driving fun. One of the most beautiful cars on the road, pleasure to drive."

"I owned a 1988 635CSI and sold it in 2003. What a big mistake that was. I have owned a Mercedes, Jaguar and Porsche since then. All great cars but I have always missed the driving characteristics of my BMW. One day while traveling through NC I spotted a 2008 650i on a dealers lot. Low miles all the options I wanted and in immaculate condition. A little negotiating and she was mine! I don't care what anyone says "There is nothing like a BMW for road manners and driving fun.""
