"I have had this vehicle for over 5 years, and it has been the best I've owned. No major issues, just keeping it maintained and loved is all I've needed to do! I just love the feeling of driving a well built piece of machinery. Driving my husbands 2014 Honda seems like a Go-Kart ride!"

Pros: "Excellent driving experience"

Cons: "Costly maintenance"

"This car drives like an absolute dream! I've owned over 20 cars in my life, and this has to be one of the funniest cars I've ever had. The fit and finish on the vehicle are excellent, especially considering it's a 1999. It has an AUX input, which was state of the art for it's time. The woodgrain accents and shift knob are top notch. The leather is some of the best quality I've seen. Great daily driver, fun to drive. The only thing, with any European sports car, is the cost to maintain. I've had to do lots of engine and cooling system work. Be prepared to spend some money to keep this thing going strong."

Pros: "Gas mileage, quick, roomy"

Cons: "maintenance and parts a bit high"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 8

"Good, reliable, quite fast, great gas mileage and still looks good at 14 years old. Usual issues with radiator around 100,000 and the costs for maintenance are typical German. You must find a good local mechanic that knows what they are doing and can tell you before a fix what its going to cost and stick to it"

"Excellent handling, even in snow. Even with age, still purrs and takes off like its new. My husband and I both drive BMW 528i - our other is the sport wagon. Best cars we have ever owned - super reliable! Only downfall, parts are expensive!"

Extreamly nice car, but expensive to maintain

Pros: "Amazing to drive!"

Cons: "Will run you to the poor house to keep running."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 4

"My mother bought the car new, and gave it the dealer treatment for the first 30,000 miles, then I took over. I have not had a lot go wrong with the car, but what has gone wrong has been stupid expensive. I have been chasing cooling system issues. I have put about a thousand dollars into it, and still am loosing coolant. Plastics are brittle and even BMW acknowledges that they break. I must say the local dealer's parts department are knowledgeable and friendly. Fuel mileage is very bad, especially if you enjoy the car. I get around 18 mpg of mostly highway driving, but I do drive rather aggressively. If you get one service with OE parts, or good German aftermarket. Parts from Autozone will not last and will cost more in the end. Now driving it is a dream, when it runs. That straight six is amazingly smooth. It handles almost like a sports car and is plainly one of the best looking 4 door sedans ever made."

Pros: "Solid heavy thunk from the car doors!"

Cons: "Pixlation problem with the diodes."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Best sport wagon ever produced by BMW. The BMW E39 touring is the best handling most fun to drive wagon. Clean sporty and simple lay out of the interior controls and ergonomically sound. Best interior over Mercedes and Audi my personal opinion. Solid fit and finish. Best heated seats in the industry. Only complaint is the cup holders better in the 3 series and 7 series skimped out on the 5. This vehicle handles like its on rails with the optional M sport package. Overall great classic execution from BMW. Always loved this station wagon."
