Pros: "It goes, handles and stops like a BMW. + Quality"

Cons: "You have to stay on top of the maintenance. $$"

"These E34's will go 300,000 miles if properly maintained without major component replacements. I found a good 1 owner example with the maintenance receipts clipped together in the glove box and 107,000 miles on it in 2010. I've driven it 80,000 miles in the last 5 years. It's smooth, quiet and has fantastic handling and brakes. It's a 3500 lb. 4 door sedan so it's a bit underpowered with the 2.5 liter six but when you're on a road trip at 70 - 80 mph the car comes alive and I wish the road would never end.In the world of sport sedans, BMW invented the class and is the standard by which all others are measured. - P.S. all my drums and my sweetheart fit inside @ 23.1 m.p.g. average over 5 years of enthusiastic driving."

"Eleventh year of ownership, and has had some repairs, nothing major. Still drives like a champ and gives me 20 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway."

"I know this car is the first i've owned, but it isn't the only one i've riden in. This is by far the quietest, smoothest ride i have ever been in. I don't regret buying this vehicle!"

Pros: "This 1995 525i is a wonderful car."

Cons: "Not for un-realistic poseurs."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"I bought this car in 2010 at 107,000 miles.I'm the 2nd owner and it had all service records in the glove compartment. The next recommended service was the belts and pulleys and sure enough,3 months later, they started to make noise. Had them replaced ($400.00) - no surprise - and I've been enjoying this exceptional car ever since, Quiet, smooth,Great road car with brakes to match and I do my own tune-ups, oil changes, minor suspension part replacements in my driveway. The later series 5's are engineered to the point where you can't do this. The E34's were the last Owner/driver cars that weren't at they mercy of your local BMW shop.I am a former road racing driver and mechanic and am 64 years old. At 176,000+ miles, I love this car. There is BMW and then there is everything else.( 1995 525i ) - The 530's and 540's and especially the 7 series are MUCH more expensive to maintain."

"I love cars. I tried so many of them. So many failed me on the way home, even after taking care of them. But the 1994 BMW 540i is so far the best. With so many miles, it still drives better than the newer cars I drove. Even though it is old and has a lot of rust, I love it, for it is very reliable, fast, beautiful and enjoyable. I salute whoever designed and engineered this car."
