The day before the start of the Los Angeles Auto Show we got to drive what will follow the Jetta TDI as Volkswagen's second salvo in the coming 50-state clean diesel push. The Volkswagen Touareg
V6 TDI delivers 221 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque (at a low 1,750 rpm, no less) and sprints to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, according to Volkswagen. The real beauty, though, is that it combines that level of performance with city/highway fuel economy of 17/25 miles per gallon. Faster and more fuel-efficient than the gasoline-powered Touareg V6, the TDI version is also smooth and quiet enough to sway most any diesel skeptic. Expect the Touareg TDI to go on sale in all 50 states early next year.
