2014 Audi A6 Review

By

KBB Expert Rating: 7.6

Audi has long been considered one of the world's great luxury car names, but up until recently, the company seemed content not making waves when it came to rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Those days are gone as Audi is now aggressively gunning for BMW and MB's customer base. Audi's strategy is clearly evident in the 2014 A6, a sedan that masterfully blends performance and luxury into a single, well-heeled machine admired as much for its efficiency as its opulence. A choice of turbocharged and supercharged gasoline engines and a new TDI clean diesel model help Audi further expand its reach, as does the 420-horsepower high-performance S6.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you love the performance feel of the BMW 5 Series, but not the firm ride and somewhat sterile interior, you'll likely be drawn to the 2014 Audi A6. Cutting-edge audio and electronics along with quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) make the A6 nearly irresistible, as does its impressive fuel economy.

You May Not Like This Car If...

Although the S6 certainly can run with the best BMW has to offer, the base A6 can't make the same claim. Pulled by its front wheels and equipped with a continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT), the A6 is no match for the rear-drive 5 Series, which also features an 8-speed automatic.

What's New for 2014

Horsepower on the 2.0T increases to 220, and a new TDI clean-diesel engine is added to the lineup. The A6 2.0T gains standard heated front seats, while the Prestige trim gains Audi Side Assist blind-spot monitoring. A number of new exterior trim and wheel upgrade packages are also offered.

Driving the A6

Driving Impressions Audi's A6 for 2014 is designed to be soft over harsh city streets, yet adeptly athletic when the road unwinds. A nice compromise between the performance-oriented 5 Series and the...

Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the A6 is designed to please the vast majority of owners who want a sophisticated driving experience but not at the expense of comfort or quiet. Although we wish the electric power steering delivered better feedback, it's not a deal breaker. Audi's supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine is marvelously responsive and the 8-speed automatic never feels as if it's shortchanging the engine's abilities. Audi's quattro AWD is biased towards the rear wheels but will favor all four equally when the pavement becomes slick enough to merit engagement. The new TDI diesel model offers impressive acceleration, thanks in part to its generous torque, and returns an even more impressive 38 mpg on the highway. The sport-oriented S6 changes the equilibrium, with its lusty 420-horsepower turbo V8 and firmer suspension.

3.0-LITER TDI CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE
With 240 horsepower, 428 lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 time of just 5.5 seconds, the Audi A6 TDI for 2014 delivers V8-like performance while returning an estimated 24 mpg city and 38 mpg highway.

STOP & GO CRUISE CONTROL
Using video cameras plus short- and long-distance radar sensors, the 2014 Audi A6 will gas and brake itself along in stop-and-go traffic. All you have to do is stay awake and steer.

2014 Audi A6 Details
Interior

The 2014 Audi A6 boasts not only our favorite interior in the segment, but one of the finest passenger cabins money can buy: an unmatched mix of contemporary design, high-quality materials and impeccable build quality. The A6 is also the choice in the segment for tech-lovers, offering dedicated Internet access that enables Google-powered maps and location information, and turns the car into a Wi-Fi hot spot for up to eight personal devices. The center console-mounted volume knob, placed conveniently adjacent to the main MMI (Multi Media Interface) control, remains a favorite small touch.

Exterior
2014 Audi A6 photo

The 2014 Audi A6's outer skin remains clean and uncluttered, a look highly sought after by Audi's clientele. The profile of the car is remarkably similar to its A4 and A8 stablemates, but it still looks fresh, athletic and purposeful. A number of exterior trim and wheel packages help buyers personalize their A6. Bright, crisp LED lighting options perfectly complement the modern aesthetic. Audi claims a remarkably low 0.26 drag coefficient for the A6, which helps the car slide through the air efficiently. Befitting its brawny, sporting role, the powerful S6 has identifying lower-body aero aids and a distinctive face.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

Although the 2014 A6 2.0T Premium boasts one of the lowest starting prices in the category, there's not a single glaring omission from its standard-equipment set. It includes all the luxuries you'd expect in the segment – leather, heated front seats, sunroof, automatic headlights, seat memory, etc. – plus many of the newer niceties like keyless start (but not keyless entry), Bluetooth phone/audio connectivity and iPod/iPhone integration. Outstanding EPA fuel-economy ratings (25/33 mpg city/highway with front-drive) make the entry-priced A6 one of the best values going in the luxury class.

Optional Equipment

Audi's 2014 A6 offers an impressive array of comfort, convenience and safety technologies. In addition to all the benefits of dedicated Internet access, the A6 offers adaptive cruise control that can stop-and-go the sedan through a traffic jam. Audi Night Vision Assistant can detect nearby pedestrians on dark roads. A color head-up display projects speed and navigation information onto the windshield, close to your field of vision. Audi Pre Sense Plus monitors the road ahead and can warn of a potential collision. For this year, the parking assist system gets new top- and corner-view cameras.

Under the Hood

Audi's supercharged 3.0-liter V6 is one of our favorite engines. With 310 horsepower and the 8-speed Tiptronic automatic in the A6, Audi says it runs 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The new 3.0-liter TDI diesel V6 with 240 horsepower produces nearly identical acceleration figures as the supercharged 3.0-liter while delivering class-leading fuel economy. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) attached to the 2.0T in FWD applications remains an acquired taste: functional and calibrated for good fuel efficiency but not the stuff of enthusiasts' dreams. The 8-speed Tiptronic automatic accompanies all quattro AWD applications, with both engines. Speaking of dreams, the 420-horsepower 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 in the S6 launches the 4400-pound car to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4

258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500-4,300 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/33 mpg (CVT automatic, FWD), 20/29 mpg (8-speed automatic, AWD)

3.0-liter supercharged V6
310 horsepower @ 5,500-6,500 rpm
325 lb-ft of torque @ 2,900-4,500 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/27 mpg

3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6
240 horsepower @ 3,500-3,750 rpm
428 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750-2,250
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 24/38 mpg

4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8
420 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm
406 lb-ft of torque @ 1,400 rpm

Pros: "Fun to drive, good power, good fuel economy."

Cons: "Uncomfortable for me; no cup holders, poor service"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 6

"This is by far the nicest car I have ever owned, and there are many things to recommend it. I have been particularly impressed with the power and the fuel economy. But... the "person storage space" (place for my electronic notepad and folders) is minimal; I wind up placing them on the floor. The cup holders are too small, you can really put two cups of $tarbucks coffee next to each other. The seats are too small; the side bolster presses against my thighs. The dealer suggested this could be adjusted, but we did not find any way to do this. The MMI "infotainment system" will go unused since the security (with multiple passwords and PINs) makes it largely opaque. The biggest issue, however, is getting it fixed. At the end of October, I was involved in what I would consider to be a relatively minor rear end collision (I was hit from the rear). The accident happened in a city without an Audi dealership, but the body shop (a part of a regional chain) seems to be profession and accessing the damage and getting the parts. The problem is getting all the parts; the sheet metal was bad enough, but getting the electronics has been a nightmare. At one point Audi did not have any of the parts and did not know when they would be available. The body shop's electronic specialist seems to be doing their best, but I don't get the feeling that they get much support from Audi. I have been without my car for more than 10 weeks and may be able to pick it up next week. I got to drive it 12 weeks. Oh, and Audi Roadside Assistance? I was hit on Saturday afternoon and was told that they could not do anything until Monday morning. Completely worthless; I won't waste my time contacting them again. No one plans to be in an accident, but I would expect more help from Audi when that happens."

Pros: "Power train, handling, styling, value"

Cons: "Needs stronger wheel shaker"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I purchased my Ibis White A6 in July after shopping the mid-size sport/luxury sedan market for 18 months. All my internet research pointed to the Audi and my own test drives (E350, GS350, 535iX, Q70 and CTS in addition to the A6)confirmed what I'd read. They're all nice vehicles to be sure, but none pushed ALL my buttons like the Audi. I shopped for a very specific equipment set; 3.0T power train, premium plus package, driver assistance package, cold weather package and Bose sound system. I wanted ventilated front seats, but to get them, you have to buy the prestige package and pay for other stuff I didn't care about. I shopped regionally (TX, AZ and CO) because there is only one NM dealer, but ended up buying locally, though with a competitive offer in hand from a Dallas area dealer. Got a great price because the 2016 A6s came out early...don't know for sure but there were likely dealer incentives to move the 2015s. Styling beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I love the understated exterior lines and low-slung stance. Surprisingly, the lower front fascia has more curb clearance than I expected...scraping the underside of the front bumper has been a sore point in both Cadillacs I've owned. The interior styling is also understated (though the retracting MMI display is cool), but material quality and fit/finish are outstanding and the front seats are very comfortable. Haven't had many rear seat passengers yet, but my 6' son claimed he had plenty of room. External visibility is excellent. And then there's the heated steering wheel on a cold morning...wonderful. The driving experience is incredible. The supercharged V6 has plenty of power (311 hp advertised - at least for me) and delivers it with turbine-like smoothness. There's no supercharger lag at all during moderate or hard acceleration. And quiet too...engine noise is inaudible at idle and unnoticeable at speed. Not sure what I'd do with the power of an S6. The car handles like it's on rails, though there doesn't seem to be a lot of road feedback through the steering wheel. Not a problem for me as I don't drive it at the edge of the envelope. I love the solid, planted impression I get when I drive it...very confidence inspiring. I'm looking forward to trying it out in icy/snowy conditions. The technology is really cool...blind spot monitors, lane keeping assist and backup-corner cameras/parking sensors all work as advertised, though the wheel shaker for the lane-keep assist could be a little more aggressive. The MMI interface is not as difficult to learn as some reviews would suggest, but it does take a little practice. Cell phone integration is seamless. I haven't really learned the voice control system yet, nor tried out the active cruise control. Google Earth integration with the Nav display is really cool! I've had no reliability issues, but my reliability score is not 10 only because I don't have many miles on the odometer yet. Combined mileage so far is around 20 mpg...significantly better than the DeVille it replaced. But I didn't buy it to save gas...I bought it to drive. And every time I get out of it, I find myself looking forward to the next time I get in."

"I have a 2014 2.0 A6 it is by far the worst luxury car I have ever owned . It has been in the shop 3 times for brakes that squeal and sound like a train when stopping . My battery died twice on cold days when the car was not driven for a few days . It is very uncomfortable it kills my back and legs .Its like sitting on a milk box with leather Audi sedans are not made for NY driving . I would never buy this car again its not worth the money you spend"

"This is my third A6, and I've lost count of how many Audi 5000. A4 since the first Audi Each time they make them better. I bought the 2014 A6 2 years ago, downsized to the 2.0 Turbo don't need the extra power kick any more. Engine is adequate, have hit 33mpg on long trips. Speaking of long trips, the A6 is a pleasant ride. Handles well ect. What distinguishes this model is the electronics, maps, radio wifi, Audi connect. Well worth the extra cost. Only problem was a failed fuel injector, dealer sent tow truck and fixed under warrantee. Now at 35,000 she still gets noticed and is a sheer joy to drive."

"This is the best car I have ever owned, and I have had a lot of cars. While pricey, it is comfortable, fast, roomy and gets great gas mileage. 40 mpg+ on the highway, about 33 mpg everyday driving. No regrets at all about purchasing this fine automobile. diesel is the way to go, I do not know why most cars sold int he USA are not diesel."
