2007 Audi A6 Review

By

The midsize A6 is the ideal vehicle for the socially mobile family in need of generous interior space and all-wheel-drive capability, but not at all interested in an SUV. Offered in both sedan and wagon (known as the Avant) forms, the A6 combines traditional Audi styling, luxury and performance with the sure-footedness of quattro all-wheel drive. Larger than the A4, but not as bulky (or expensive) as the A8, the A6 offers a range of models and features with broad appeal to the premium midsize luxury sedan buyer.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you're in the market for a premium sedan whose road manners are as smart as its styling and price, the A6 should be on your list. Those who live in foul-weather regions will appreciate the impressive abilities afforded by the A6's quattro all-wheel drive.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If you prefer simple controls and easy-to-understand components, the A6's high-tech interior may be a bit overwhelming. If you're a driving enthusiast, the lack of a manual transmission option could be a turn-off.

What's Significant About This Car?

The S line Package is now offered on the Avant, with the S line's 18-inch wheels available as an option on all A6 quattro models. The A6 4.2 receives a new FSI 4.2-liter V8 good for 350 horsepower. Other changes to the A6 line include a new trip computer/driver information center, cup holder, overhead console, an MP3-compatible CD changer and metallic trim surrounding the instrument cluster.

Driving the A6

Driving Impressions Supreme confidence on both expressways and winding roads is markedly enhanced by the sure-footed feel of quattro all-wheel drive. Acceleration is quite satisfying with the V6 and the automatic transmission...

responds effectively. No, it's not a powerhouse, but few drivers really need the V8's extra horses. Only if you get a thrill from lunging, full-throttle takeoffs would the V8 be a better bet. Overall, the A6 experience falls just a little short of serene—mainly because the ride can get bouncy on washboard-stiff surfaces and through harsher bumps, though the suspension reacts rapidly.
Favorite Features

Quattro All-Wheel Drive
For negotiating curvy canyons or snowy streets, Audi's famed quattro all-wheel-drive system gives the A6 a real advantage.

Multi Media Interface
Although it subjects its operator to a learning curve and not every function is entirely intuitive, Audi's MMI system is a sleek solution for the control of in-cabin technology.

From the driver's seat, the A6 comes across as one serious sedan. Leather surfaces are inviting, though seats are on the firm side. They're satisfying for long-term touring, however, with helpful but not intrusive support and bolstering. Backseat riders get plenty of headroom and knee space, but the center passenger must suffer the indignity of a stiff perch and a high floor hump. Fully calibrated gauges are especially easy to read, though the MMI (Multi Media Interface) control can be a handful. Don't expect an unobstructed view over the left shoulder, but visibility is good otherwise. An electronic dashboard button opens a glove box that is short on space.

Exterior
2007 Audi A6 photo

The new look of Audi is evident across the A6 body. Up front, a bold trapezoidal grille—tall and split into two elements—is flanked by sleek Xenon headlamps. Designer Achim Badstubner says it's the kind of dramatic front end that promises "overtaking prestige on the Autobahn," informing drivers who see it coming in the rearview mirror that a serious machine is on its way.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

Even in its most basic form, the A6 feels loaded to the brim. Standard features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), front and rear fog lights, front and rear head-curtain airbags, 12-way power driver and passenger seat with four-way power lumbar, leather seating, tilt/telescopic steering wheel with touch controls, one touch up/down windows with pinch protection, cruise control, power trunk release, 10-speaker sound system with six-disc CD/MP3 changer and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Optional Equipment

The V6 sedan can be equipped with such fine features as Bi-Xenon headlamps, Bose audio, adaptive speed control, solar moonroof panel and polished wheels. The Cold Weather package includes heated front seats and a ski sack. Enthusiasts can opt for the S line package, which includes a sport suspension, upgraded alloy wheels, headlamp washers and S line trim. DVD navigation, rear parking sensors, rearview camera, leather dash and SIRIUS Satellite Radio are also available.

Under the Hood

Both the V6 and V8 engines are more than sufficient to move the A6. It's simply a matter of how quickly you wish to be moved. The 3.2-liter V6 is smooth, quiet and refined, delivering excellent low-end torque for quick starts as well as respectable highway fuel economy. The V8 turns the A6 from quick to remarkably quick, but you'll pay a premium at both the dealership and the gas pump.

3.2-liter V6
255 horsepower @ 6800 rpm
243 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3250 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/27

4.2-liter V8
350 horsepower @ 6600 rpm
325 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25

"Solid as a vault, the quattro system is fantastic and tested a lot during this last crude winter, i pamper the car a lot, but the quality of construction and materials used, make this car look and feel as a newer one. I love AUDI, and this is my third one. I recommend the A6 of this generation."

"Purchased as Certified Used. Lease car with 23000 miles in 2009. Unstoppable in snow & rain, handles like a sport sedan. E Class MB wagon drives like a bus compared to the A-6 Avant. Comfortable & versatile touring vehicle that will run all day at 80+ mph. Have driven from Phila. To Montreal as well as Phila. To Fla. I plan on driving to Atlanta twice this summer. I currently also own two Mercedes and can say that the Audi Dealership experience is not in the same league as MB. Keeping this vehicle in top mechanical condition is not cheap, avg. ~$1500-$2000/year not including tires. Rewards for maintaining it are high! The A-6 Avant is no longer available in the US, I would consider buying newer one if it were."

Pros: "Fun to drive, good mileage"

Cons: "2nd front cup holder is hidden"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"First Audi, great experience. The CVT took an initial "getting used to" period. The A6 is quick of the mark, particularly in Sports mode. I only, truly, gripe is that the second cup holder up front is hidden under the arm rest. 17 miles between home/work with traffic, average 21MPG at and average 24MPH."

"At over 165k miles, the has only needed typical maintenance. Brakes, tires, oil, etc. it is still "tight" and I feel like it has another 100k miles in it, trouble free. It is my 5th Audi, and all have been great"

"this is the 4th A6 I have owned and the only thing I don't like is the 50 miles to the dealer. I switched to the V6 from the V8 when I bought this model and could only tell the difference if when I had to "floor it", which is never - now that I'm in my 60's."

"I am in love with this car. I have only owned domestic vehicles so I was a little timid about buying a import. I purchased my vehicle 2nd hand with roughly 165k miles on it. I am only home for 30 days out of the year and wasn't looking to have a monthly payment for something I don't drive. I have put approximately 5k miles on and could spend all day driving this car. Its handles like a dream, better than my '96 Cobra. The last time I was home, I did have to take it to the dealership to have my coils and plugs replaced because the #6 cylinder was misfiring, expect with the mileage. Quick and not too expensive fix. I live in the mountains of Maine and was caught driving home in a snow storm one night. My road hadn't been plowed yet and had about 8 inches of snow and the car handle it just fine with the Quattro drive train. The road might as well have been dry. The engine has good, smooth power and quiet. I wouldn't attempt to work on the engine due to its fine tuning. The car rides smooth. I am sold on this brand for life."
