2007 Audi A6 Review

By

The midsize A6 is the ideal vehicle for the socially mobile family in need of generous interior space and all-wheel-drive capability, but not at all interested in an SUV. Offered in both sedan and wagon (known as the Avant) forms, the A6 combines traditional Audi styling, luxury and performance with the sure-footedness of quattro all-wheel drive. Larger than the A4, but not as bulky (or expensive) as the A8, the A6 offers a range of models and features with broad appeal to the premium midsize luxury sedan buyer.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you're in the market for a premium sedan whose road manners are as smart as its styling and price, the A6 should be on your list. Those who live in foul-weather regions will appreciate the impressive abilities afforded by the A6's quattro all-wheel drive.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If you prefer simple controls and easy-to-understand components, the A6's high-tech interior may be a bit overwhelming. If you're a driving enthusiast, the lack of a manual transmission option could be a turn-off.

What's Significant About This Car?

The S line Package is now offered on the Avant, with the S line's 18-inch wheels available as an option on all A6 quattro models. The A6 4.2 receives a new FSI 4.2-liter V8 good for 350 horsepower. Other changes to the A6 line include a new trip computer/driver information center, cup holder, overhead console, an MP3-compatible CD changer and metallic trim surrounding the instrument cluster.

Driving the A6

Driving Impressions Supreme confidence on both expressways and winding roads is markedly enhanced by the sure-footed feel of quattro all-wheel drive. Acceleration is quite satisfying with the V6 and the automatic transmission...

responds effectively. No, it's not a powerhouse, but few drivers really need the V8's extra horses. Only if you get a thrill from lunging, full-throttle takeoffs would the V8 be a better bet. Overall, the A6 experience falls just a little short of serene—mainly because the ride can get bouncy on washboard-stiff surfaces and through harsher bumps, though the suspension reacts rapidly.

Quattro All-Wheel Drive
For negotiating curvy canyons or snowy streets, Audi's famed quattro all-wheel-drive system gives the A6 a real advantage.

Multi Media Interface
Although it subjects its operator to a learning curve and not every function is entirely intuitive, Audi's MMI system is a sleek solution for the control of in-cabin technology.

From the driver's seat, the A6 comes across as one serious sedan. Leather surfaces are inviting, though seats are on the firm side. They're satisfying for long-term touring, however, with helpful but not intrusive support and bolstering. Backseat riders get plenty of headroom and knee space, but the center passenger must suffer the indignity of a stiff perch and a high floor hump. Fully calibrated gauges are especially easy to read, though the MMI (Multi Media Interface) control can be a handful. Don't expect an unobstructed view over the left shoulder, but visibility is good otherwise. An electronic dashboard button opens a glove box that is short on space.

Exterior
2007 Audi A6 photo

The new look of Audi is evident across the A6 body. Up front, a bold trapezoidal grille—tall and split into two elements—is flanked by sleek Xenon headlamps. Designer Achim Badstubner says it's the kind of dramatic front end that promises "overtaking prestige on the Autobahn," informing drivers who see it coming in the rearview mirror that a serious machine is on its way.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

Even in its most basic form, the A6 feels loaded to the brim. Standard features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), front and rear fog lights, front and rear head-curtain airbags, 12-way power driver and passenger seat with four-way power lumbar, leather seating, tilt/telescopic steering wheel with touch controls, one touch up/down windows with pinch protection, cruise control, power trunk release, 10-speaker sound system with six-disc CD/MP3 changer and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Optional Equipment

The V6 sedan can be equipped with such fine features as Bi-Xenon headlamps, Bose audio, adaptive speed control, solar moonroof panel and polished wheels. The Cold Weather package includes heated front seats and a ski sack. Enthusiasts can opt for the S line package, which includes a sport suspension, upgraded alloy wheels, headlamp washers and S line trim. DVD navigation, rear parking sensors, rearview camera, leather dash and SIRIUS Satellite Radio are also available.

Under the Hood

Both the V6 and V8 engines are more than sufficient to move the A6. It's simply a matter of how quickly you wish to be moved. The 3.2-liter V6 is smooth, quiet and refined, delivering excellent low-end torque for quick starts as well as respectable highway fuel economy. The V8 turns the A6 from quick to remarkably quick, but you'll pay a premium at both the dealership and the gas pump.

3.2-liter V6
255 horsepower @ 6800 rpm
243 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3250 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/27

4.2-liter V8
350 horsepower @ 6600 rpm
325 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25

Pros: "Comfort, great in all weather, highway driving"

Cons: "few repairs but are expensive"

"I bought this car used at 2 year point and 40,000 miles. I lived in NY until recently and drove it in all types of weather. It plows through anything especially with good snows on it. I have had only normal maintenance on the car until just recently but it is now 8 years old and 150000 miles. It needs new valve cover gaskets, still doesn't burn a drop. Needs new rear brakes, gee, only got 100000 miles on them. Rear tail light assemblies get moisture in them and are prone to failure but still going. MY ONLY concern now is how long to keep it before it does start showing its age and goes down the slippery slope of maintenance costs. I love this car, most comfortable highway driver I have ever owned. I often drive 10 plus hours a day and never get a sore back etc."

"This car is sooo smooth, I really really like it. Everything feels very quality like.Luxurious! Lots of power when/if you need it. Brake system really saved me once.... In the past I have had a Sterling, Mitsubishi Montero and Acura (liked all, but not like this one!) I dont think I would ever spend the money on a brand new one (I guess it goes for most cars)."

Pros: "Interior, Quattro AWD"

Cons: "Price, maintenance costs"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I purchased my 2007 Audi A6 used with 69,000 miles and I have driven it to 100,000 miles. The only flaw I can find is the well documented slight hesitation from a stop when you lightly accelerate. I knew about this when I purchased it, and it is barely noticeable. The interior is fantastic. The Audi MMI takes some patience to learn, but then is quite easy to use. Quattro is unstoppable. I drove in two northern Wisconsin winters with all season tires, and you have to try to get it stuck. Comparing it to a BMW 5 series comes down to the interior and the Quattro AWD. The Audi wins hands down here."

"Have owned this car since new. Totally reliable, smooth, fast. No creaks, rattles. Still great styling for an 8 year old vehicle. Interior has held up great after taking a beating from little kids. No major issue (or minor ones for that matter). Burning a little oil, but that's to be expected. A must buy used or new."

"This 2006 is my second Audi A6,both were purchased new, it is a great car. I will buy another one. It rides like a dream with 186,000 miles on it, has the same great pick up as when brand new. It is great in all weather, handles snow and bad weather roads very well. I have treated it well, never missed any maintenance. Currently it has begun to require oil before the scheduled maintenance, not an issue for me. I consider this an expensive car to purchase, however my husband has had 3 cars to my one, so cost benefit analysis, I am doing better."

Pros: "Good Looking Very Safe Car"

Cons: "Engine, Service, Cost, Mech."

"Really wish I would have stuck with Mercedes, Lexus, or Land Rover. Yes I'm saying it..... I have had 3 Range Rovers and NEVER had issues with any of them!!!! This is the 1st used car I've bought and what a nightmare. Thought I was safe going to an actual Audi dealer, but nope. Before the temp tag was expired the problems began..... 1) Roof Leaking...Not the moon roof, the actual roof. 2) Month 3 coolant light randomly comes on and off, had sensor replaced 3) coolant light again, coolant tank replaced. 4) Oil Leak 5) CV Joints 6) Driveshaft 7) Valve Gaskets 8) Washer Fluid Tank. Now my check engine light has been on for like 5 months, and the Audi dealer cant seem to figure out what the problem is. I have multiple engine cylinder misfires now. Every time I try to get this thing fixed and spend a few grand at Audi, when I pick it up they inform me that what I just had done didn't fix the problem but doing "abc" should with a price tag of a few more grand...... I have had this car for about 2 years. It had 70k miles on it when I bought it. Total time since purchase I haven't had some kind of warning light, sensor, etc.. on, TWO MONTHS!!!! I have pumped over $7k into it so far in just under 2 years. So much for the CERTIFIED AUDI DEALERS how ever many point inspection. Oh and the "warranty" they give ya to 100K miles.... USELESS!!!! I will never own, nor will I recommend Audi to ANYONE!!! I expected so much more. But kudos to LAND ROVER ('99 '03'05 RANGE ROVER); JAGUAR('07 XK); LEXUS ('02 SC/LX '04 LX '08 LS/LX); INFINITI ('04 M45); MERCEDES ('99 SL500 '05 CLK500); & BMW ('03 X5 4.4). Out of the cars listed above, the ones I had NO, NONE, ZERO problems with and in my opinion are superb .... LEXUS / LAND ROVER / JAGUAR. While the other are great. But AUDI.... NEVER AGAIN!! NEVER!!"
