2008 Acura TSX Review

By

Acura's 2008 TSX competes in the bustling compact premium sedan market. Although not as large or powerful as the Audi A4 or the new BMW 3 Series, price, quality and exceptional resale value make the TSX a worthy competitor. The TSX delivers an exceptional balance between ride comfort and road handling, and returns fuel economy figures rivaling some economy cars. If you can live without a V6 engine and the option of all-wheel drive, the well-equipped TSX has much to offer, especially when considering its sub-$30,000 price tag.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you grew up with Honda Civics and Preludes, but your new position in the world demands driving an upscale sedan, you'll love this car. The 2008 Acura TSX has the capability to serve as a business vehicle on the weekdays and a driving enthusiast's dream on the weekends. Its tight, six-speed manual transmission and powerful VTEC engine make it a blast to drive.

You May Not Like This Car If...

You may not like the 2008 Acura TSX if you are used to a torque-heavy V6 engine that offers up a hefty dose of power below 3000 rpm. Another quibble: Rear-seat legroom might be tight for some adults.

What's Significant About This Car?

The TSX has only one change for 2008---Bluetooth hands-free phone integration as a standard feature.

Driving the TSX

Driving Impressions The 2008 Acura TSX is powered by a 2.4-liter, 16-valve four-cylinder engine producing 205 horsepower. You have your choice of either a six-speed manual or five-speed Sequential SportShift automatic transmission....

Though quick, the TSX lacks the "pit of your stomach" punch only a six- or eight-cylinder engine can provide. Driving the TSX with the six-speed manual is a pure joy. The car is so well balanced that it almost seems to slice through curves like a knife through whipped butter. The front-wheel-drive layout works well for the TSX, providing excellent traction while being nearly devoid of torque steer. Acura has equipped the TSX with a comprehensive stability and traction control system known as Vehicle Stability Assist, or VSA. It's a nice feature that will provide you with peace of mind as you have fun with the TSX's nimble suspension.

Voice-Activated Navigation
Acura's voice-activated navigation is one of the best in the industry. Not only is it relatively simple to operate, you can vocally ask it to find landmarks, restaurants or gas stations.

Six-speed manual transmission
It's safe to say that Honda knows how to build a good front-wheel drive transmission, but this one is just a peach. Shifting through the gears in the magnesium box is pleasurable enough that we often found ourselves doing it just for fun.

2008 Acura TSX Details
2008 Acura TSX photo Interior

Here is where the magic begins. The 2008 Acura TSX's interior is clad in the finest materials, far superior to anything in its price range. Every switch moves as though Teflon-coated and all the seams line up precisely. The seats are wonderfully comfortable and supportive for sporty drives, the dash is handsomely adorned with wood or aluminum and soft-touch vinyl and the instrument panel puts on its own light show once the sun sets; it's all truly a work of art.

Exterior

Though some complain the TSX is rather basic in its execution, we think its sharp lines and clean appearance will stand the test of time better than some of the more trendy designs currently on the market. Build quality is beyond reproach, and the car is backed by a four-year/50,000-mile warranty.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

The 2008 Acura TSX comes nicely equipped and includes a choice of six-speed manual transmission or five-speed Sequential SportShift automatic, four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes (ABS), Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control, 17-inch wheels, heated leather power seats (eight-way for the driver, four-way for the passenger), power moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, 360-watt Bose audio with in-dash six-disc changer, steering wheel-mounted controls for cruise and audio, front side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, Bluetooth hands-free phone integration, xenon headlamps, fog lights, XM Satellite Radio, heated side mirrors, auto-dimming rearview mirror and remote entry.

Optional Equipment

The only option is the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition.

Under the Hood

The Acura 2.4-liter engine is marvelously silent and smooth. It delivers plenty of punch, though you'll have to rev it until the tachometer needle is well past the 3,000-rpm mark to make the most of the engine's power and torque.

2.4-liter in-line four
205 horsepower @ 7000 rpm
164 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/28 (manual), 20/28 (automatic)}

"Fantastic quick little car, perfect for any couple with no kids or kids that are full grown and out of the house. ONLY because it has a very tiny backseat. I'm a six foot tall woman, so naturally i have to scoot my seat back a lot. It leaves very little room for leg room in the back."

Pros: "BALANCE of all good traits"

Cons: "AC Compressor bad design."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"This car is an incredible balance of fun, luxery, style, practicality, size, performance, and capability. Its just amazing how perfectly balanced it is and then throw on top of that the fun and durablity its a home run.I have gotten as high as 32MPG Highway but normally get 28 with mostly highway driving. I only use regular gas. I bought the car with 69K on it and have now owned it for 6 years and am at 198K. Its running GREAT. I have only had 2 repairs in those 6 years. I have had to replace the AC compressor twice. Apparantly its a bad design low on the engine that is prone to failure and Honda will give a partial refund to those that have had them replaced at a dealer. My only advice is dont opt for a used compressor like i did the first time i replaced it. Other than that all i have done is plugs, oil, brakes, tires, rotors, filters, serpantine belt, radiator hoses and gasoline."

Pros: "Stylish, reliable, easy to use, easy to own"

Cons: "Slow, small, so-so gas mileage"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"My TSX has been absolutely reliable, comfortable, and dependable for the entire period of ownership. I'm the second owner and I picked it up when it had about 28,000 miles on it (it had been leased by a female before I bought it, my only data for the previous owner). Since I was coming from the dark world of out-of-warranty BMW ownership, I had been conditioned like Pavlov's dog to expect big service bills and lots of annoying build quality headaches. Instead, the Acura has proven to be a reliable and dependable companion for nearly 75,000 miles under my ownership. There have been virtually zero mechanical issues and the only things which have broken have been minor nonessential items. What has worked well: • The car has been reliable and dependable and has never once left me stranded or without a working car. It just works. The build quality has stood up to years of being parked outside, short and long trips alike, and plenty of use for my personal and business travel. • It still looks good! Even though it's a few generations old now, the car still looks good. I have very dark tinted windows which I think looks great on a silver car by creating a contrast. The 17" alloy wheels also look nice. It's not the sexiest car in town by any means but it is respectable at business functions, on dates, and for cruising around. • Acura service is pretty affordable and I've had a good experience with them. I know that taking it to the dealer for service, particularly outside the warranty, is unnecessary and more expensive than using an independent mechanic. However, having "free" access to loaner vehicles (most recently a brand new Acura RLX!) is invaluable and they do a nice job at prices that I can almost always understand. Again, I'm coming from BMW ownership, so your perspective may vary. What hasn't worked so well: • The trunk release button broke and is pretty expensive to replace. I can still open the trunk through the lever on the inside of the car or with my key fob so I have just written off the third method of entry. • The ashtray door swivels on a hinge and mine has been broken for awhile. Again, too expensive to replace for something I don't really use. A minor annoyance. • The bluetooth phone feature is nice but it requires me to shout to be heard and the audio quality of the other party isn't great either. I almost never use it. • I'm a big guy and the car is kind of small but that is a user decision and not the fault of the car itself. • My fuel economy hasn't been too great considering it's a small car with a small 4-cylinder engine. Again, this comes down to the user, but I'd like something above 30MPG and it does not consistently achieve that in the city. On the highway, it'll do 30+ MPG though. All-in-all, I can't say enough good things about this car. It's almost hard to pick anything apart with it. If you're looking for something reliable, reasonably good looking, with great features and a solid power train, look no further."

Pros: "Extremely reliable, fun to drive, good MPG"

Cons: "Premium fuel required"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"With the exception of perhaps the 2004 Acura TL, I doubt you will find any other 2004 sports sedans to be as well equipped as the 04 TSX. I bought this car with 110k miles on it. This is a fun car to drive. The 6 speed manual is very smooth. It is nimble and agile. I get a combined average of 27-28 MPG. I have had to pay for a few minor repairs but nothing too expensive. I love this car and would highly recommend!!"

"Best handling car I've ever owned. Easy on gas (25-32 mph range)and super dependable. Easy to park. Because this is a sporty model, it sits lower than most cars and some senior citizens have difficulty exiting the car."
