Seeking a more cost-efficient way to create lightweight components for its upcoming Megacity Vehicle line and other future "Project i" offerings, BMW and the SGL Group have formed a new joint venture that will specialize in producing carbon fibers and other carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials. The initial €90 million ($160 million) investment will cover the establishment of two companies. SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers LLC will be located in North America and produce raw carbon elements while SGL Automotive Fibers GmbH & Co KG will be established in Germany and weave them into cloth that can then be made into actual components by BMW. While the BMW/SGL ownership of the joint venture will be split 49/51 percent, each will have an...
Merging the performance personality of an M car with eco-consciousness befitting the best of its ActiveHybrid technology, BMW's Vision EfficientDynamics Concept offers a look at where the German automaker plans to venture in the years ahead in its quest to meet tomorrow's requirements for sustained mobility. Due for public display in Frankfurt, this dramatically styled 2+2 all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid matches a three-cylinder clean turbodiesel engine with a pair of electric motors fed by a lithium-ion polymer battery pack to create a system that can call on up to 356 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft of peak torque for short periods, sufficient to propel the 3,076-pound Vision from 0-60 mph in less than 4.8 seconds and on to an electronically limited top...
While hard facts remain few, Dr. Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the board of management of BMW AG, has offered a bit more insight regarding the marketing path the automaker plans for its upcoming eco-oriented advanced mobility vehicles. Contrary to earlier reports that indicated BMW would create and support a fully separate brand, Dr. Reithofer stated that the Megacity Vehicles currently under development by the firm's free-thinking project i group will be sold as a sub-brand that carries both BMW and vehicle-specific badging, echoing the approach used on its high-performance "M" cars. He also indicated that the pure-electric efforts being developed by project i would not necessarily be limited to vehicles with four wheels, raising the intriguing...
In a wide-ranging press conference that dealt mainly with the automaker's decision to end its costly involvement in Formula One racing at the end of the 2009 season, two high-ranking execs also confirmed that BMW is readying a revolutionary "Vision" concept car for the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. Intended to help set the stage for a new era in the company's illustrious history, it will more directly reflect a more extensive and intensive corporate emphasis on increased sustainability and accelerated development of production-oriented designs and technologies. Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said the one-off Vision would be "a CO2 champion to demonstrate a whole new dimension of driving pleasure with regards...
It's not quite what you think. But the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has just passed the first legislation requiring solar-efficient glass to be used in all new cars sold in that state starting in 2012. Beyond literally keeping occupants cooler in the summer, the coincident reduction in the use of air conditioning will help improve average fuel economy and decrease the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. This new regulation will be enacted using a two-stage roll. From 2012-2015, all vehicle glass must be capable of rejecting at least 45 percent of the sun's total heat-producing energy, except for the windshield which will have a 50 percent rejection requirement. Starting in 2016, the numbers will rise to 60 percent all around. CARB data...
